...but you'd be ignoring 'Metropolis' (1927).

I'd still put my money behind 'Crimes of the Future' (1970) as being the first cyberpunk movie before there was a "cyberpunk". It is comprehensive in its genre hallmarks, a shadowrun, features computers, and includes vat-grown biotech -- the literal alternative to cyberware.

It takes more than cybernetics or sci-fi tech -- by a large measure -- to classify something as 'cyberpunk' in its theme.

I haven't seen Metropolis, but I've gotten the impression that it doesn't share many traits with cyberpunk beyond having a futuristic dystopian setting?

A futuristic dystopian/industrial society, with a full-body cyborg and transhumanist AI...
That's pretty 'cybertech' -- not so much 'cyberpunk'.

It's some of the earliest sci-fi in motion pictures -- and seminal in many other ways.

It also lacks the whole "lawless subculture" thing.

There's an italian movie called Nirvana that has Christopher Lambert as protagonist that is 100% cyberpunk and really good. There are cyberware, netrunners, AIs, corporation dystopia and everything you can ask from cyberpunk.

Visual effects were not top notch, and it's about 25years old, but Gabriele Salvatores director is top tier, and the plot is one of the best ever made in the genre.

Twenty pages and no one mentioned Dark Angel? It's cyberpunk- set in a dystopian version of our own time and some of the tech and issues, written back in 2001 are scarily relevant for our time. (Was set in future when made).

So, what makes a book or movie "cyberpunk" is that it focuses on a lawless subculture in a futuristic society dominated by computer technology.

I guess the definition is somewhat loose and 'cyberpunk' is imo a bit of a silly name for a genre, but personally I think it's important to bear in mind the 'punk' part. Not as a literal reference to the punk movement, but as an indicator of a certain attitude that's perhaps hard to put in absolute terms. I did try a couple of posts back, though.

Take it from the man who coined the term 'cyberspace'.

This show was always more 'cybertech' than 'cyberpunk, to me.
James Cameron did a better job writing/producing 'Strange Days' (1999) -- the greatest cyberpunk film ever made.

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet but Elysium is quite good.

Also the first 5 minutes of Avatar Directors Cut shows the future world in a dystopian way something out of Cyberpunk or Deus Ex.

There are many movies set in the future and with a Cyberpunk'ish *setting*, however there are not really many movies with Cyberpunk as a theme, about an actual punk hacker.
Johnny Mnemonic or Matrix is probably the closest. I'd instead explore books, it's just way easier to find what inspired this universe, Neuromancer (which is where they got Nightcity from), Hardwired, there are many. Currently gonna read Hardwired since its a book i missed back in the 80's.

It should be mentioned that since cyberpunk isn't just about the fancy tech, but also about a certain mindset and mood - there are also non-scifi media that's relatable to cyberpunk.

Many 'Film noir' movies are typical examples of this. For example, 'The Third Man' - which is free to watch on Youtube, by the way.
