Wildlife in cyberpunk

why are there no animals? no rats in the city, no wildlife anywhere except a cat. is there a reason for that?

i would expect some wierd mean wild animals outside the city. what about pigeons and rats in the streets?

how do they get their food?

no , but they say all garbage can is unique in each district .

too polluted and/or irradiated for normal animal life. Protein is now mostly insects. Pacifica has cricket farms.

I saw rats at some areas.
My explanation: there where more important aspects that needed attention then the wild live.

You do see a chicken at one point. It lives for about five seconds. V makes mention that owning them is illegal because of "the plague" etc.

It's explained in the lore.

"Avian extermination act". "The last surviving seagull".

Basically, they killed all wildlife. Because it was "transmitting diseases". They also apparently euthanized the last living koala because of the same reason, and early on you have news speaking about it.

The food is made out of fried ground crickets. The company behind the idea also tried to use planarian flatworms as food source, but people weren't fond of the idea ("eating worms"). Poultry is illegal.

Street food is apparently a hellish mix of chemicals.

There are many other fun pieces of the lore. For example

Marine travel is dead, because during corp wars, some cretin released a self-replicating AI there which builds mines in oceans. The AI went rogue, and every ship that tries to travel through ocean is blown to bits.

Honestly, most likely the planet itself is dying in that world. Especially when you read about green antarctica and extreme weather in europe.

I think you can find the information in game in a book called "protein farms" or something. I know its in All Foods for sure. In the same book it also describes earthworm farms as a cheaper and more efficient way to feed people, but most people don't want to eat worms. Cool little snipet of lore.

it seems is a miracle that humans can live in such extreme conditions. night city seems like they are perfectly adapted to that situation.

They literally talk about this in part of the main story. So imo its fine.

However, out in the desert should be a different story imo.
