edit: so it seems like its not even worth to upgrade weapons that are not Iconic since i often loot the same type of weapon on an enemies body that has better stats than the upgraded one.
All you're really doing is raising the level of the item, which for some reason the game hides from us. If you simply kill enemies that are your level (or higher) you'll get weapons that are at that level without any upgrading.
As for iconic, just craft a new one. You can craft a purple version, then destroy that to make a legendary version. It's a bit silly, but I've found it's often cheaper to just make a new weapon entirely after awhile, as the upgrade costs get too expensive.
It´s way cheaper than buying legendary stuff (~50k+ for assault rifles f.ex.)
At level 15-20 it's better to find blueprints for purple and legendary items and craft those. You can buy mats from the vendors. Why is it better? Because they have more mod sockets and damage mods are very strong on some weapons. Same goes for clothes. A 20 armor item with 4 sockets is much better than 120 armor item with 1 socket because of the armadillo mod.
