Attacking MAELSTROM during FLATHEAD results in BROKEN vehicle chase
Just a warning - and a chance for anyone to chime in if they've found a workaround (that doesn't involve never using a car again).

Patch 2.1 added in "gang aggression car chases" directed at V, if she does too many things against the gang.

Well, it turns out "too many things" happens with your very first hostile action towards Maelstrom, if you decide to go hostile on them during the Flathead mission.

As a result, the VERY next time you get in your car, you will be pursued relentlessly by cars full of Maelstrom gang members, INCLUDING ELITES. I had 4 cars pursuing me for a total of - 8 regular gang members and 4 elites. This is when I was level 5, btw.

I've seen people reacting to this problem by RETURNING the game itself, deciding it's not worth playing. Which is too bad because the game is great, but this very early mechanic will definitely lose potential players.

Does anyone know of a workaround? I'm guessing there's a mod somewhere. The only suggestion I've seen is to avoid getting in your car - for the rest of the game.

Also, is CDPR even on this?

Patch 2.1 really undid so much greatness that patch 2.0 brought in.

If they're too many to take on just drive to a good spot, leave the car and run away. Once you've lost them the event is concluded and you can immediately drive around again.

Yeah, escaping them (either by outdriving them, or on foot) is really the only good option here. Fighting them is completely unbalanced.

It is something they should fix though. The encounter itself is fine, but considdering it's triggered by one of the game's starting missions, they really should ensure the enemies are scaled to the player.

Just reload and try again. You've gotta hit and run. Was this added in 2.1? Much welcomed then.

1) Level up before doing this gig (& subsequent ones). Really. Do it. I'm serious
2) Working as intended - you were in their base killin their doodz, after all
3) They forget about what you did to them after they give you some payback a couple times afterwards. Did this gig last week when I started my current playthrough - I too antagonised them/roughed them up a bit during the gig (understatement; everyone except Brick got either ended or quickhacked hard)
4) Do The Pickup without 'whacking the wasp nest with a stick' I.E don't attack them ?

Not really. The attack is intended, sure, but a level 5 player should not be attacked by 4 level 25 Elites.

In my current playthrough (v2.12a), i did this mission at level 14, and i knew what was going to happen, so the moment i got in my car i cheesed it, with the intend of outrunning them (even had a good route planned out in my head).

It still took me 3 tries to survive it, because the enemies that attack you are so over-levelled, that getting hit by even a single bullet was near fatal.

i smack Royce over the head with a gun and kill him every time, then run through the base with them knowing im there. I hack, but im melee focused. Stealth isn't much of an option in All Foods; No car chases experienced here.

I didn't rush to this mission though, neither on my 1st playthrough or my current, so both times i was well above Level 5...

My latest save i had the Aerodnight as my car before i started this mission.
(I even killed brick this time). No chase after this, either.

It must be related to attacking them, but both times i was detected and shot at so it can't be the act of simply attacking them... It has to be related to the dialogue with Royce. No other explanation..

So........ i recommend hitting him over the head to avoid the chases

This subject has been done multiple times on the forum.
So without all the drama that the OP has tried to create............... you can get the bot from maelstrom without fighting as an option.

Just want to point out that all enemies are your level now except for the elites which are one level higher. you encounter similar odds when doing gigs/missions in NC.

This is not correct, I fought my way out of The Pickup, I also did all of the gigs and NCPD jobs and killed loads of Maelstrom outside of that and I'm now way past Act 1 and I've had a grand total of 2 chase encounters with Maelstrom.

1.lower difficulty to novice
2.kill them all
3.return your desired difficulty
4.continue using vehicles

I was done that by way i described above, and was not any problems.

Sadly that was first and last time i see any revenge against me (:, I dont know why. I see how other gangs shoot and make war on streets, but not against me anymore.

It happened to me and do you know what I did? Drove off the unfinished bridge nearby where the cyberpsycho is and lose them, I was on a bike.

This is not a solution.

Dealing with Maelstrom in different ways has different outcomes later in the game. This is as designed, this has been in the game since day 1, we are supposed to be able to make a choice here, a choice that will lead to different rewards and outcomes later.

When a newly added game mechanic comes around almost three years later and suddenly spoils the fun, well that's just no good.

This needs to be resolved. Simple as.

This is atleast a functional workaround, untill this gets fixed.

But again I'll make the point that there's something else going on here, I dont know if mods are involved or something else but I've done The Pickup twice now in 2.12 and this has never happened to me.

I just did The Pickup yesterday and encountered no issues while doing the hostile Maelstrom resolution and killing Royce. Yes, you encounter occassional (very much occassional btw) Maelstrom vehicles giving chase but no more than TC's when you kill enough of them.

So clearly its not a general bug with the mission.

Even without any leveling beforehand, you can dispose of the pursuers even on hardest diff without much effort.

Doesn't need to be fixed.................working as intended.
So you can choose to get the bot peacefully.
You can run away on foot when they attack your vehicle.
You can kill them when they attack your vehicle either by getting out of your vehicle or drive around in a weaponized vehicle.

I will also add there is the option to just drive and out-drive them and get away.

Just because you can't /won't deal with it that others don't want the feature included in the game.
