Am I not supposed to access Dogtown while I'm on Automatic Love?
I just bought the DLC and I want to see how well it runs on my laptop, but the gates are locked and got killed while killing the guards.

You can't start Phantom Liberty until you've completed Automatic Love and gone on to find Evelyn. Then you have to complete the quest that leads to, and you will get an unmistakable call to initiate PL.

I recommend you do a fair amount, if not about all of the base game before heading into the expansion. What happens in the base game has some bearing in the PL endings you probably would prefer not to miss.

I'm fairly sure you get a mission pop up for Dogtown. Might be after the evelyn questline, though it's been a while since I played.
You can't enter Dogtown through the main gate on your first visit. You have to meet Songbird at the market in front of the gates. She will guide you in.

So I'll have to progress then, I must be pretty close.

Will I get a call or SMS that is going to be hard to miss?

You'll get a call from Songbird when you're able to access Dogtown.
It should unlock after completing the full questline with the Voodoo boys.

As far as I remember you have to keep the quest tracked via your journal. It will give you a message to look for Songbird as soon as you come close to the gates.

If you only want to test Phantom Liberty performance, why can't you just simply make a dummy Phantom Liberty save?

Don't wanna spoil myself, to be honest. At first I thought Dogtown would unlock after Act 1, but nope.

There should be a new mission in your log called simply 'Phantom Liberty'. It will tell you which missions you have to do before you can start the missions to get into Dogtown.

I'll have to check it, thanks for the headsup.

Yeah, it says I need to find out what happened to Evelyn.

You can just rush the voodoo boys quests once they open to you (which are some pretty good questlines IMO).

If you wait until completing your romance partners paths before starting Dogtown you'll get a small bonus interaction via text/call with them while doing DT.

Another option that might be worth mentioning in a discussion about starting the Phantom Liberty DLC: when starting a new game there are two options, 'Regular Start' on the bottom left and 'Skip Ahead to Phantom Liberty' on the bottom right. I would not recommend the second option but it is there. It starts you at level 15 with the call from Songbird outside the Chapel that ends the Voodoo Boys questline. You could, conceivably go meet her and get into Dogtown. I wouldn't recommend it, but it's there and possible.

No thanks, I think I will spend my time enjoying the game instead of beating most games faster than most people do.

I know, I saw these options when I wanted to start a new game. Pretty nice actually, but it's not something I want to do.

No doubt. I'm on my 5th playthrough and still take my time with every one of them, like 130hrs+ each.

I didn't mean like speed run it, moreso once you get the VDB questlines just complete all of them in a row instead of doing one then someone else's quest then another VDB one...etc.

Oh, there's a fun little side quest in Pacifica that's only available if you have not completed automatic love yet, btw.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.
