To RESHADE or not to RESHADE?
I'm sure you've all seen those photorealistic videos of Cyberpunk and how good it can look for a couple mods here and there but mainly Reshade.

The question is, do you use Reshade, how does it affect your fps and performance and overall is it worth it in your opinion for a little more eye candy?

I've tried a few reshades, but I've never found one I liked better than the vanilla game. Either they are too light, too dark or the colours look washed out or muted. I'm not motivated to try more.

You don't even need a reshade, Use either nova LUT or one of the GITS LUTs, I use nova pure personally, its incredible and I dont think it has any performance loss since its just colors/weather changes. I have a reshade just to brighten whites a bit and use a different film grain cause I dont like the in game one.

I've seen some good reshades but they all seem to only be made with one weather and time of day in mind

mods suck in general. Everytime i load this game up my mods are suddenly corrupt even after I update them all. I wouldnt even bother with any of them.

It's mostly the mods and path tracing in those videos. The reshade settings that are used are pretty minor (I tested some of the reshade presets).

In my case, I've done a ton of tweaking with reshade, and have pretty much just kept messing with settings and effects until I felt that it was working. Here's a couple of images though.

This is the vanilla game with just reshade. No native Ray Tracing, it's all handled through reshade.:

This is Reshade with the Edge LUT:

To me, the second image shot looks a bit washed out, so now I'm going to have to somehow find the right reshade setting to balance the color intensity to my liking.

edit:
Actually scratch that, I ended up removing the Lut mod.

I only use Nova LUT, it's a recolor and weather change (i believe).
The little reshade i tried has too much impact on performance for minimal visual improvment (like RT/PT...)

Also be careful on advertisiing : videos and pictures can be edited, recorded at lower framerate...
i have seen a "8K" youtube video while the blur and aliasing was on 1080p level...
Making a pretty UE5 demo is easy. Making a game with stable frametimes...

It was worth it for me to remove the piss filter and fix black levels

Alright OP, got another screenshot for you and based on it, I recommend the Nova LUT Pure.

So this is with the Nova LUT Pure + Reshade:

This mod, I'll definitely be keeping.

That's what I've been using. Nova PURE, GITS, HD rework, etc, just a few mods like that to make everything look and run better.

But to get the really realistic, almost like a body cam look, with nice DOF, I can't find anything to really get that look apart from throwing in Reshade in to the mix too. But the down side is Reshade costs me around 20fps, which is a lot in an already demanding game.

I usually leave Reshade off when it comes to combat and doing actual missions because I want smoothness over eyecandy in those situations, but when just walking and driving around Night City and taking in the sites, I sometimes like having Reshade on.

I have NOVA LUT + GITS ENV and reshade to fix some stuff here and there, but honestly.. You don't even need them all that much as a LUT + ENV is good enough..

And most of the videos you see about "Photorealistic graphics 8k hur durr" are just misleading, they are only put out there to tempt people into paying for reshade presets.. Basically to gain money off of the work of modders on nexus... All of the paid reshades are also just basic reshades with a few changed options, nothing else..

Edit: I might remove the GITS env i have because it requires loads of performance..

Reshade is only going to hurt your fps if you're using certain effects. Otherwise, it's pretty neutral.

Here's some examples:
- Surface Blur
- Pascal RTGI
- Radiant GI
- MXAO
- Nice Guy Lighting
- DH Uber RT
- FXAA
- Clarity
- Quint sharp
- Deband
- Bloom
- Reflective Bumpmapping
- SSR

These will have a signifant impact on fps. So basically, if you're losing fps then you'll likely need to turn some of those off ^.

If you're using things like:
- Lut
-Colourfulness
- Film Grain
- Fake HDR
- Levels (controls dark point and light point)

Then the fps hit is pretty minor. Fake HDR can vary in performance.

Even the hard hitting effects will really depend on how you tune the settings. As is, I'm getting a fairly constant 60 fps on my RTX 3060, with reshade handling ray tracing, mxao, blur, reflective bumpmapping, and a multitude of minor effects.

For me, I had to learn reshade, because I play a lot of games that don't support ray tracing, so the answer for me ended up being reshade.

reshade has very little to do with making your game look photorealistic. That relies heavily on the combination of LUT, ENV, and path tracing etc. Reshade can help adjust the colors etc and make it look even better, but on its own will not suddenly make your game look "photorealistic", like not even close.

Compared to the above stuffs, reshade has relatively very little impact on performance.

I somewhat agree.

Reshade can do a lot more than color adjustments, but it really depends on where you set the effects.

Will it be photorealistic with only reshade? No, but you can at least simulate things that happen in real life, when looking at stuff. Surface blur, noise that occurs when looking at things, a minor fresnel effect with bumpmapping (not nearly as strong as native ray or path tracing, but it's there). So pretty much little things that will enhance a image, plus you can create your own luts to use in reshade, to add extra color grading to a game.

In short, you get out of reshade what you put into it, but there are of course limits.

yeah, that's pretty much what I was saying too. Reshade will make the game look even better, but it's generally not the thing doing most of the heavy lifting, especially not in the case the OP is asking here about making the game "photorealistic".
I think once you start tweaking more stuffs in reshade, the performance cost will also increase more than those that simply tune the colors, brightness etc.

check out cyanides luts and envs honestly, theres a ton of reshades presets and they will all look and work differently with different luts and envs,

can spend forever testing, gotta remember everyones game will look different on the hardware there using, type of monitor, hdr sdr etc,

ive only ever found 1 reshade i liked alongside gits and nova lut only took about 5 to 7 fps, but now im back to just using cyanides new nova lut 2 supernova
