Sheesh. Give them an inch to see if they like the game's style and they want the world for free.
Free demos are a thing, however but it's up to the publisher to decide if they want to release a demo or not. Like RE3R:

The quoted section, "we are not able to provide the trial for PCs in the same way as for consoles", suggests that they may be considering a different trial for PC—one that's a smaller download with a majority of the content excised. Saved games might be trickier to transfer.
Addendum: There is a Steamworks Documentation page for "Free Weekends" so I'm kind of curious as to what "technical reasons" mean in this case specifically. This is total conjecture on my behalf of course but it's probably got to do with the lack of DRM/copy protection.
