The game is full of made up future slang.

"Choom", "Nova", "Preem", "Gonk", and a bunch of other words are fictional in-universe slang.

Over time you start to pick up the meanings as you hear them used. "Choom" means friend, "Nova" means cool, "Preem" also means cool, "Gonk" means idiot, etc.

If I had to guess I'd say "Choom" is probably a corruption of chum. "Nova" is an actual word when means new and it's usage in-game probably reflects a conflation of something new being cool. "Preem" sounds like it comes from the word premium; i.e. high quality. "Gonk" if I had to guess comes from gunk which means dirty or messy. It's often used in-game in the form of "gonk-brained" which probably comes from gunk-brained. In this usage it would imply someone's mind is messy/incoherent/scrambled thus implying that they're stupid.

These are just my guesses though. Some of the slang has obvious meaning (like "Badge" for cops, referring to police badges; "Huscle" which is a portmanteau of hired muscle; "Joytoy" meaning a prostitute) while others are less clear, such as "input" and "output" which means "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" respectively - this one's a double entendre referring both to digital inputs/outputs and penetrating/receiving during sex.

Other examples are "klep" meaning steal from the term kleptomania referring to a compulsion to steal, "demon/daemon" referring to a computer virus, "flatline" meaning kill/die coming from the medical term of flatlining, "eddies" which comes from the abbreviation ED referring to the eurodollars used in-universe, "chrome" for cyberware which is pretty self-explanatory, and a bunch of other examples.

Like I said if you play the game long enough and pick up on the context you can figure out what most of the slang means on your own. The origins of the slang is more of a guessing game for a lot of it, though.

I've noticed that some of the slang words bear a resemblance to Norwegian (and probably other languages) terms.

For example we say 'prima' (pronounced 'preem-ah') as slang for cool / nice / good / perfect etc, although it was more used some time ago (like decades). I think 'prima' is Italian or Spanish or something for good, though?

And 'choom' reminds me of our 'tjommi', slang for a friend / buddy. Also used mainly a while back, although I still hear it occasionally :VBOY:

Choom is the shortened version of the slang term.

Choombah is the masculine form, Choombatta is the feminine form.
Chooms is the plural.

Also...
To 'delta' is to leave, exit quickly.
'Ghost' means to disappear on someone without explanation, to be super sneaky in stealth situations or to kill a target.
'flatline' means to kill someone, to die or is also used as slang for the end of a relationship or sometimes the end of a situation/work job.

'inputs' are boyfriends. 'outputs' are girlfriends. (Based off American 'outlets' which are what they call the electrical plug sockets, I think)

Corpo is short for corporate.
Gangoon is a gang member. Gangoons is the plural of them.
Mook is the corp version. Mooks being their plural. Both are considered 'disposeable' (by GMs, players and their own higher ups lol)

And "Deets" are the futuristic cringe way of saying "details".

The Cyberpunk world has a lot of it's own slang, makes sense, since they diverged from out timeline a long time ago, their slang would be different, but not unrecognizable. Night City, as a massively multicultural city, can create a lot of different slang terms from various languages. https://cyberpunk.fandom.com/wiki/Streetslang

People are already saying that now. It will probably be just as common in 2077. It seems that people are generally less educated which has led to a decreasingly verbose population.

It's the same meaning as Shadowrun's "Chummer"

I wasn't sure if it wasn't real english as I'm not a native I can't figured it out. There's a lot more than english and we aren't ALL fluent in that language -_-
