How can kids live in Night City?
How can kids live in a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like Night City with all the oversexualized ads, murders, gangs, and other dangers? It seems worse than the world of The Witcher. In Night City, everywhere you look, there's some form of explicit content being shoved in your face. The billboards, the commercials, even the graffiti, all of it is designed to exploit and degrade.

On top of that, the constant threat of violence is overwhelming. Murders are so common they barely make the news. Gangs control entire districts, turning neighborhoods into war zones. The police are either corrupt or completely ineffective, leaving citizens, especially families, vulnerable and scared.

Comparing this to the world of The Witcher, where danger comes from monsters and magic, Night City's threats are much more pervasive and insidious. In The Witcher, there's at least a sense of order and heroism with a clear line between good and evil. In Night City, that line is blurred, and survival often means compromising your morals and humanity. The environment is a relentless assault on both physical safety and mental well-being, making it hard to imagine how anyone, let alone children, can grow up in such a place without being deeply affected by its harsh realities.

I know it's just a video game, but it is an interesting thought.

It's a different world that evolved into a different culture than our world IRL over more than a century. Just look at our past century IRL to see how much it changed. Now, deviate that from the 1960s into a different direction.

Our standards do not apply to this alternate timeline. We just have to accept that it's different.

That's what makes this game fun. It spurs the imagination. And to reinforce this, I saw kids playing with guns in game. (I think the last time I saw them was in the Kabuki market.)

I don't see how unrealistic it is, given that the game is set in the year 2077. There's already a lot of sexploitation in advertising/clothing/music as it is. Comparatively, some what we view as "tame" in today's standards could have been "CALL THE PRIEST! THERE'S DEMONS IN THIS!" levels of scrutiny even in just the 80's.

Murders being so common they barely make the news is (unfortunately) not so uncommon in today's world, as are corrupt police.

I think of the world in the game like "Yeah, I could see us getting comfortable enough with sexuality that Nicola, BD, and Mr. Stud ads are everywhere." And with violence...I mean, living in the States I see firsthand how people can be so blasé now to gun violence, so violence in general doesn't surprise me.

I also didn't get enough sleep last night, so I'm probably just talking out my ass.

Theyve had to learn to adapt you ask how can they like its been a choice for them. They just tend to get used to it I imagine and dont really think too much on it. You gotta realize too how much times have changed since the 1970s thats the same amount of time difference between the game and us now.

It's not too far from real life, depending on what part of the world that a person lives in.

Many of the kids we (the player) see wandering the streets are likely to be orphans.
Then there are the kids whose mom n pop are gangers, so don't have time to keep em in the house (hovel, squat ect)
Throw in the addicts of various types and you have a lot of juves who grew up without much adult supervision.
The Street brought them up.
(Where as today, TV then the internet, then things like YouTube and tiktok brought our kids up when mom n pop ether couldn't or wouldn't)

The kids you aren't seeing are the ones in the Corp zones. ConApt kids. They would be called 'Beaver Brats' (that's what they were called in Cybergeneration)
A slang term which came from the old show 'leave it to Beaver' perhaps, or perhaps the cyberpunk verse had no 'BoyScouts' just 'Beaver Scouts'?
They are clean, safe but bored out of their minds in suburban areas.
In 2077 they would be living in corp controlled apartment blocks in Charter Hill, with the better off families living in the City Center and Corpo Plaza zones.
Maybe even some in the Arasaka Waterfront zone (if it wasn't all just blocked off and ade of shells in game lol)

Think 'school' for most kids is a virtual thing by 2077. Something they can do at home. Unless they ended up in one of the Corp run academy places, like Lucy and David from the anime.
So yeah, it's doable. There are a lot of kids we don't see in game, at home. And don't forget the kids like Rivers niece and nephew. Suburbs areas like the nicer parts of Haywood and Arroyo ect. They are inside, being bored but safe lol.

See it from this perspective; In a world that basically went to ♥♥♥♥ and keeps going there, all that matters is sex, money and power. Just like in the real world. Seems fitting for this game's universe. Children draw the short stick, along with many others. That's just how it is.

I haven't been to the States since 2004, but I have some idea of what LA is like.

what does "dystopia" mean

"Dystopia" is a world that functions as it needs to, but is very poor/unpleasant to live in. We're getting there in our own world.

Yes, or kids for short.
CloudSeeker May 30, 2024 @ 10:19am
So.... Have you been living under a rock? There is plenty of all of that already in our own world. People can live in very VERY bad situations. Just because things are horrible does not mean people will not try to live there. What else are they supposed to do? Go, lie down and die?

Well I live in CA not from LA but I go there from time to time. South Central is just as bad. There are strip clubs, pawn shops, gun shops, and liquor stores everywhere yet plenty of kids grow up there.
