You can clear the whole expansion, finish every quest, side quest, ncpd point and do all the content within Dogtown.
You just have to make a choice at one point. To put off a certain call. (If you chose one particular path) otherwise, you can continue on to Embers and finish there. And make your choice of end path after.
As to whether or not to finish the main quest or the expansion first, its up to you. Finishing the expansion via one of the two pathways opens up one more ending path for you, should you choose to wait for it after Embers. Otherwise, you can choose that path as soon as the expansion is done, and never visit Embers.
The way it works is once you go past that point you must finish off the mission.
Once you finish the mission it does end the game but there is a big caveat to that.
Once you finish the credits unless you picked a specific ending the game will create a new save for you with some extra items and things you found at the ending and drop you back right before you crossed the point of no return, so you can keep going. (It is up to you how you feel this works, and the game will not acknowledge you have done any endings.)
Given that setup you can do the ending (Minus the one or maybe 2 that don't give the option.) and then go on to play the rest of the game and maybe a different ending, with some cool extra items if you want.
The ending won't work with is the ending where you go with Reed and the NUSA which is also not available unless you have done PL and maybe the suicide ending where you just shoot yourself at the point where you decide the ending path . Not sure about the second, only ever did that one once.
That point where you got too close, and the game warned you... Its connected.
You should make at least a backup manual save a bit away from there.
(I recommend positioning yourself far enough away that it does not trigger the warnings, and facing the tarot card on Embers outer wall. That way you can see the card, and remember which manual save it is, via the thumbnail image.)
The Embers Elevator of Doom has almost as high a body count (of dead V save games) as Adam Smasher lol.
When you go there, you should walk. Not jog (the default speed) since sometimes your stats and bonuses can speed V up, even when just jogging.
The save starts outside the elevator, but sometimes it ends inside it.
Once you are inside it, the game sets you into a peacemode kind of state.
V can only walk, talk and maybe scan.
Many V's have died because they could no longer fight, run or hack, once they went back for 'just one more gig'
(Their save was stuck in that peacemode and permanently so)
Its not too bad, if you are just going back to do other ending paths. Being stuck peaceful there is not an issue, since you are just going back into that elevator.
But if you planned to go do something else (klep cars for El Capitain, visit 'increased criminal activity' spots ect) you are so out of luck, if your save is PAX'd.
