I'm also on my first playthrough of the game and googled a bit about how to play with the DLC. I copied something I found somewhere into a text document:
Note that I changed the order of the missions listed there as I completed them, but you get the gist of it
So now I'm playing both the DLC and the original side by side, doing gigs and side missions in both places (and they sometimes overlap).
I'm about a third of the way through the main story of the DLC, and I have the mission 'Nocturne Op55N1' still to do for the main game, which I will save until most other things are done in the game, I believe, since there is 'no turning back' once it's started, and you're forced to choose an ending.
I've read you'll be asked if you want to keep playing after you finish the main story, though, and taken to a point before the ending, and given some bonus gear depending on your chosen ending, but I'm not sure how that works yet.
I must say though, the Phantom Liberty endings are absolutely not more satisfying, they are almost even more depressing.
Just to clarify, complete the act 2 missions, not act 3. When you start act 3 there is no way to go back, so you won't be able to do the DLC at all.
Or that's how I understood it. Good luck!
Are you sure about this? I had the 'invitation' to go to the Dogtown entrance for a long time, from lvl 20 to lvl 40 or something, if I remember correctly, doing all kinds of different missions and gigs before I finally started the DLC content. Or do I misunderstand something here?
But I remember one mission where you had to meet up somewhere within 24 hours (if you didn't come along right away) or the quest would fail, but I think that was some quest from Panam, regarding romancing her (which I've done
