First time play through. Should I get Phantom Liberty now or wait until I finish the game?
Just curious if I should play the game vanilla and then get the DLC after I finish, or if it is better it to get the DLC now. (I'm in chapter 2 right now)

I ask because some games the DLC adds on a lot to the vanilla game and changes it, and in others the DLC is mostly in it's own little partition.

Phantom Liberty is so great, it even surpasses the main game story.
Get it with closed eyes Choom. I mean it.
And play it right after you are done with the Voodoo boys. (you'll see, without spoilers).

Phantom Liberty is a much better fleshed out story than the main game.

It adds an easy 40+ hours. Very high quality DLC.

Thanks, but this doesnt actually answer my question. Should I install it now or wait until I actually finish the game?

Install now because you can just leave the place sitting there until later anyways. It won't start until you get in there.

But if you want more main map content you should at least do the intro missions to the DLC once they unlock (after pacifica) so you can get for example, the car theft side mission unlocked. Then they can spawn in the main city, and a bunch of cars are locked behind stealing enough of them to be allowed to buy instead of street cred.

There is no reason to wait to install it. Even if you wanted to put off access to the DLC "Like the base game one but BETTER" cybernetics sold only in dogtown (Hey kid do you like -40% damage taken from things in melee range instead of only -20%)

DLC does unlock a new ending option if you take a certain route, but that is optional anyways and a lot of people take the route that doesn't give you a new ending anyway. And a few minor missions have variations if you do main map content first. (free head accessory from lizzy if you do her quest first is the main one people care about)

Personally...I'd play the base game and explore it thoroughly before getting into Phantom Liberty. You don't want to miss out on anything in this game, and the temptation to dive into Dogtown and go to one of the new endings might be too strong.

The replayability of this game (IMO) is huge and amazing...you learn a lot in the base game, and I'd want to take that experience with me into the Expansion. In short...I suggest that it's worth your while to wait on Phantom Liberty until you're familiar with the base game.

Phantom Liberty takes place during the time of the main game, and you can move from one to the other freely after a certain point in the Phantom Liberty story. Also like the main game certain quests in PL need time to pass before moving on, so you might want to have something more to do and go back to doing base game quests. Another thing is a bit of a spoiler, so feel free to not look it will be marked with a tag.

To continue playing after finishing the main game, you are basically set back to a save point before you finished the last quest. So you are in effect doing the DLC before finishing the main game anyways.

TL;DR: Install now.

If I had to do it over, I would have unlocked the car thief missions earlier. I was concerned about screwing up the story.

Instead, after I completed "all" the side and main missions I did my ending, and THEN went back to PL by *********. Kind of broke the narrative flow for me.

Fortunately, my capacity for suspension of disbelief is vast, and often aided with chemistry.

Install it now if you have the option

If you're getting it then get it now. I say that because yon't do the Arasaka Parade mission until after you complete Phantom Liberty (and Panam's stuff and the Voodoo Boys' stuff). Phantom Liberty does feature its own ending that is definitely distinct from the rest.
