Orange++, for example, would be like Nue++. (name++)
Weapons have a top set of attachments (circles at left side) which can be removed/added at will but only for its tier and below (ex blue can't use a purple attachment, so either find a blue or if Iconic upgrade it). (ex scope, silencers, etc.)
Weapons also have a bottom set of mod slots (circles at left side). The higher the tier seems to increase odds of mod slots, however, be warned that mods can never be removed so once set that is what it will be. I can't remember if any Iconic guns have mod slots but if they do those would be the ones I would be careful about, but for normal guns it doesn't matter much because you will replace them pretty regularly as you level until around level 40+ orange where leveling slows a bit.
Honestly, aside from the Pax mod I mostly ignored mods until level 40+ and even then I wouldn't bother looking at it seriously unless its an orange++ weapon. IThe mods in the game don't particularly make a huge difference, imo, and many of the ones you want you can't readily get anyways. They also don't seem to upgrade past blue easily unless I'm missing some trick (don't think I've ever seen above blue sold at shops).
