If you have to fight a psycho and they're trying to melee you, they're good practice targets for melee combat and learning the timings to counter them and then beat them into submission. Hammers are very strong at mauling people, especially when you send them to the floor with a stun. A certain boss in the vanilla story will come at you with very powerful mantis blades, so the practice will come in actual handy too.
So just attack cyberpsychos normally. if they are still moving or your crosshair turns red after downing them they are alive. If you say they are dead in your message to then you have to reload, but usually that won't happen unless you accidentally attack the psycho once they are down.
Locking movement quickhack and knocking the cyberpsycho unconscious made the questline easy.
