After the rework armor is based entirely on cyberware. Each cyberware piece has a listed armor value (typically increases with rarity). You can see how much per piece in the Cyberware menu, and also how much total armor you have. Some clothing like armored vests can provide a minor bonus.

10 points of armor roughly negates 1 point of damage per second. So 600 armor would be enough to totally blunt a 60 dps machine gun. It's not enough to just wade through a hail of gun fire with no care for cover but it's enough to help you dive between cover or live long enough to bonzai charge enemies.

Armour vests can be useful early game but once you're getting some preem cyberware it's essentially like slapping a bullet proof vest on a tank. I still use it for roleplaying purposes, i love the idea of V sitting in their car outside a gig location and slipping on a vest knowing things are likely going to go sideways. MERC LYFE!

Thanks for the info on "10 points of armor . . .". I've always had the idea that Armor is pretty useless especially given that a lot of weapons in the player's hands ignore armor and I assumed it is the same for these weapons in enemy hands.

I have focussed more on armor with Mitigation rather than high number armor
