just wear the few actual pieces that give some bonuses like armoured vests and helmets and some eye wear
everything else you can sell and disassemble
i also like to keep the full costume items in the stash :P
I think you have to do that to make them "stick".
Anything that has 'flavour text' and is legendary or iconic should be stored in your stash unless you plan to never actually wear them.
Items like outerwear, Netrunner suits, oculus and masks ect, stuff with an actual effect (like, reduces quickhack cool down, allows extra zoom in combat, has +5 armour ect) should be worn in the actual equipment slots (far left iirc) and yes, you WILL look like you got dressed from a box of cast off Bozo gang clown gear lol. In the dark.
That's where the 6 wardrobe slots come in handy.
As others have said, access the wardrobe (ether in an apartment, your inputs/outputs place or at a clothing store) and anything you have picked up at any point in the game, will be there for you to wear as a transmog.
You can pick and choose what suits your style as you will.
Wardrobe does not affect your stats. Only the equipment you have slotted will.
You can also access your stash from the back (or front, or not at all depending on the car) of your vehicles. Bikes too let you access your stash for quick dumping.
Stolen or 'borrowed' vehicles don't have this tho.
