As for the playerbase, it is roughly 50/50 but the common consensus is that female V's VA is better than male V. The way her VA delivers is just more believable and a much better character, just listen to a sample of the No Coincidence novel as the same VA is reading it. Though some say that male V shines in certain situations like having a bromance with Jackie, which I do agree with.
Personally I prefer female V for, you guessed it, better voice acting. I also agree with Drahknon, Judy is the best romance option. But I can go either or, some lifepaths builds I have make sense for male V or female V IMO.
I think the whole story, especially the Johnny deal feels much better as male V. I think it would've been better if they had more time to develop and instead of Johnny maybe fem V could've got Alt engram for a different perspective on things. Fem V sharing the body with Alt and getting a whole different side of the story would've been really cool.
Both have outstanding voice acting, but for me, playing male V I feel more in character and more personal so I'm enjoying my second playthrough more than my first.
I do find they both make V different though. Fem V feels more laidback and agreeable and even sweet in more touchy moments. Male V has much more edge and a thug'ish tone which in a lot of times fit like a glove for a game like this, especially as a Street Kid background choice and Jackie bromance. There is passion and emotion but it's much more raw and badass. I understand how that doesn't sit well with everyone though.
Also, the clothing in the game looks better on male V in general for me, with the exception for clothes that were especifically made for females like the dresses, cropped, skirts or booty shorts.
In the end it comes down to preference, really. And a lot of us like looking at attractive female video game characters. So I'm not surprised that fem V looks more popular as a primary reason.
I disagree with the take that fem V VA is better. They are just two different takes on the same character and both deliver it really well.
(but then Male V also says a lot of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lol)
V can be a very personable character given proper dialogue choices. and there are a lot. Who knows, maybe to change things up I'll make a female on my third playthrough, on my first now.
