Having a save that created after 2.0 would give you the best experience.

does it change anything over than the dlc as last time i put 80 hours into a character so prob 80 more but dont want to do that if it only are the dlc area

Not recommended to continue older playthroughs for stability reasons due to so many reworks and changes, so better to start an entirely fresh playthrough.

The new experience is pretty nice and somewhat different, so that's another good reason to start fresh.

Whole system was changed so leveling and building your character is a new experience. Story wise its the same + dlc. As a person that finished 1.63 version and is playing now i wholeheartedly encourege you to play from the start. Enjoyed it more from the start than 1.63 but it is only my personal experience.

Yes Crimsomrider explained it well. Due to changes 2.0 brought it is recommended to start a new character. You can still play with your old save but expect bugs and glitches and stuff.

When would you recommend starting the dlc on a new character then? Seen a few posts saying making friends in night city can change stuff in it but they are not clear on that for spoiler reasons

DLC doesn't unlock until late Act 2, after you finish the Voodoo Boys stint.

I'd say the DLC is fine to start as soon as it's unlocked - pacing and story-wise it makes sense; though I recommend doing it after most of the side quests and character questlines. There are points in the DLC main quest where you have time to go and do other things, so it meshes well.

I would still prioritise getting all of Act 2 completed before finishing the DLC though. Find those periods where you can take a hiatus from the DLC, and do some more MQ stuff.

You will be locked out of the dlc till the end of act 2. It will be listed as a gig but it will be showing you do this and that in the story and when you do all from that list than you will be able to play dlc. As for dlc story missions, there are few that let you ask for help people you befriended during main story. So if you have helped such and such you will get option to ask them to help if dont then you will not have them in the dialogue options.
