DLSS 'Auto' setting flawed?

With my current PC, if I set DLSS super resolution to "performance" I can achieve 120fps. However if I set DLSS super resolution to "Auto" I quite often (especially in dogtown) never hit 120fps. So this makes me believe that the "Auto" setting only scales between "quality" and "balanced", it doesn't use the "performance" setting. I would like to always have the game running at 120fps but I don't want to have set the game running at "performance" mode permanently as this doesn't let the game run at higher DLSS settings when my PC is able to.

Has anyone noticed this?
