Unreal: What's next for CDPR games?
The remake of The Witcher in Unreal is a good opportunity to learn Unreal to make a familiar game, but the engine doesn't hold anyone's hands. Bad habits are easily obtained. Unreal has its own way of doing things best that contrast with other engines in which I've meddled. Trying to use Unreal like any other engine (such as RedEngine) will end in disaster.

With the right dedication, patience, and willingness to learn a new way of doing the same things, it can be awesome, but many recent AAA attempts in the past few years show how easily it is to shoot oneself in the foot with UE.

I worry that executives see those two UE5 demos and tell their developers, "Just do that," when the demos were extremely narrowly focused. There's no "Just do that" with UE. You get a blank page and an excessive library of modules available that will easily overwhelm an application rather than add to it.

This isn't CDPR's first rodeo, but it's their first rodeo in UE, a different beast to tame. Getting it to replicate a game is one thing. Getting it to do something fantastic is a whole other thing that replicating a game will not teach.

UE is great but laden with pitfalls that even AAAs fall through.

My policy is don't buy games day 1. Wait until they fix the game. We all know CDPRs next game will be a mess at launch. I would love them to prove me wrong but I'm not holding my breath.

Thee's a new Witcher game in the works, and I'm certain that there's a new Cyberpunk game in the works. Beyond that, dunno.

edit:
A Cyberpunk themed MMO would be interesting I think.

I think the big challenge for them is towards the end of the new Witcher trilogy. They're talking about the last two full games (not expansions!) being done in 3 or 4 years but the initial game being on a 'normal' development timeline. All while setting up another studio to do Cyberpunk sequel, and learning how to use UE5. It seems very ambitious, and not in quite the same way as they did four games crossing their fingers hoping it'll all be alright on release day.

Curious to see what happens over the next few years there.

Doesn't hold anyone's hands? It's one - if not the most - well documented engines in the industry. Ofc bad habits can be learned but actually maybe there's little polish documentation?

Regardless of how well documented, how well optimised and how wide-spread Unreal Engine is, CDPR's excuse no.1 will be "we are learning new engine" to justify an ocean of bugs, technical issues and poor overall quality of their first game in Unreal Engine. Even though they went above and beyond to look for people experienced and knowledgeable in Unreal Engine game dev. Looking at how they couldn't figure out their own engine, I can't even imagine how chaotic and all over the place Unreal Engine development will become.

Add to it that CDPR, by all intents and purposes, became Epic Games' contractor to develop "seamless open world" module of Unreal Engine, and you will come to conclusion that we will not see any CDPR's game made in Unreal Engine for at least another 10 years.

I would love a Cyberpunk MMO. Unfortunately I don't think the genre is popular enough to support an MMO or am I wrong?
