I can't believe CDPR is ditching RedEngine after this game
As many have stated, this game is absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gorgeous on high end hardware. I mean, nothing else even comes close. MAYBE Last of us on PC, but IMO Cyberpunk looks better. On top of that CDPR and Nvidia have been close bedfellows for the last few years and almost all new Nvidia tech has debuted in this engine.

That in mind it's crazy to me that they're ditching this amazing engine in favor of Unreal 5 for their next releases. Yes Unreal 5 looks amazing as well, but after all the time and effort they put in to making this an absolute best in class engine I can't believe they're leaving it behind.

"Luster" is about visual quality, about sheen or iridescence

Oh I never knew before, I usually seen this word use to describe something lazy, ineffective and some other negative tone. Good to know.

GTA 5 is not a sandbox by any means. And CP 2077 is not designed to be a sandbox. If it was, it would be. That is not a result of the engine rather a result of specific design decisions about what CP 2077 is and what it is not.

Sorry, yeah that wasn't a very good example, GTA have always been action/adventure game with some element of open world sandbox slap on it just like what CP 2077 advertise it would be, maybe I should've bring up GTA SA instead since that the most fun GTA to ♥♥♥♥ around in.

That's the sunken cost fallacy.

That's the sunken cost fallacy.
One has to be careful how far they take this, however. Moving to a new engine is not magic. And your people don't learn magically. There will be pain points. But sunk cost does play into the decision. B/c not only do you lose all of the man hours you put into the old engine you also lose all of the quality control hours and all of the bugs and fixes. We reported a ton of bugs and they fixed them. What is to guarantee they won't have more with a new engine b/c they will be new to the tech AND all of the lessons learned from the past might not be applicable but there will be new lessons to learn moving forward.

It is a trade-off for sure. What is the cost to continue as-is vs the cost to start over? Thankfully, those decisions are always above my pay grade. Haha. I'm the guy that gets you to the moon. I don't care why you are going to the moon or how much it costs to get you to the moon. I just know my job is to make sure you get to the moon and so that is what I do. I will get you to the moon better than anyone else will get you to the moon. At least I hope so. Now if you say you want to go to the moon and I design for the moon and you change the destination to Mars, well, we have a problem.

I’m not a CDPR insider, employee, leaker nor am I affiliated with them in any way. But I do know this:

A major decision like switching game engines isn’t a choice that you make lightly or based on a whim. That is, you don’t just wake up one day and decide “Hmm, today I feel like ditching our in-house engine for Unreal 5.

Again, I don’t know any of the internal dynamics going on at CDPR but nonetheless I can guarantee you that the choice to move from REDengine to Unreal 5 was not a choice that was made lightly. Whatever reason or reasons they had for switching to UE5 I can (again) guarantee you that they thought about, deliberated, argued and finally reached the conclusion that the pros of adopting UE5 outweighed the cons of keeping + maintaining REDengine.

Right. Oh the meetings on that one. It is a HUGE decision. Careers hang in the balance on these types of decisions.

Name one UE5 game that isn't optimized like dog crap? Nobody has made a single UE5 game to date that doesn't suffer from considerable performance/optimization issues.
