b. you need a smartlink weapon. (not a power(conventional)/tech/precision weapon)
c. when you rt-click to bring up the 'box' to aim, it takes a second or two to 'acquire' a target*
* - the target lock will be lost if the target moves out of the box.

Except if you turn off the crosshair in the options, like i clearly stated in my post, you don't get a box, it only appears if you have crosshair for all weapons turned on in the options. Without having it turned on you recieve 0 feedback on target and lock-on time.
- that characteristic 4x lines that form a box, then a solid-box?

Here is is without the crosshair enabled in settings:

There is no box without crosshair enabled. And when you engage enemies without the crosshair/box enabled it offers no feedback on target or if it's locked on.
No there is no highlighting without the box. It's kinda dumb because i don't wanna play with crosshair enabled because it looks ugly. Now the gun still locks on and shoot at the enemies like it would with the box. But it offers zero feedback on who it's locked on to or when it's fully locked on.
