I find the WASD keys and mouse very hard to use.
TBH I'd have to boot up the game to check how the mouse works for driving. The <^> keyboard arrow keys alone work fine for me...they just take a bit of practice. [Your space bar is the brake].
There are Nexus mods that improve the driving characteristics as well I like Cyber Vehicle Overhaul but you have to install Cyber Engine Tweaks to run it, and that may be more than you want to do so early in the game. Actually, with Patch 1.7 coming in the near future, sticking with the base game and no mods at all is probably for the best.
I'd strongly recommend getting a controller, to be honest, because the difference between driving with keyboard and with controller is night and day. The game allows you to swap between controller and keyboard and mouse whenever you like without having to do anything special, so you can use the controller just for driving and then just use the keyboard for walking around as normal.
