Game Feels Choppy No Matter What
So I gotta say I'm kind of disappointed. Just spent a fortune on a 4090rtx to experience the future, see this pathtracing stuff in action at a stable fps, get access to DLSS3 the works.

With pathtracing on I'm still able to get around 60fps, less while moving like 49-55.. ect. Of course enabling DLSS3 gets me in the 90s 100% of the time.

Sounds great but for whatever reason the game still FEELS choppy and framey like I'm getting low framerate and it hurts my head! At first I chocked it up to being a downside of DLSS3 so I turned it off, no difference. I even turned the game down to low settings with no DLSS3 to see if somehow my FPS counter was off and I was getting low frame-rates.. still the same.

What gives? Where is that coveted 'butter-smoothness' we pay all this money for?

Check your latency via Nvidia Geforce Experience.

(You can check your input latency by enabling in Nvidia Geforce Experience overlay and select Latency from the performance metrics.)

Be sure to enable vsync via Nvidia Control panel, force it on for Cyberpunk via nvcp. (Either globally, or on just Cyberpunk 2077.) Be sure to toggle off vsync if its on in-game naturally.

@ 4k, DLSS 2 set to performance and Frame Gen on, you should get around 90-120fps in most areas with an average latency of high 30's- mid-50's

Some market place areas will bring fps down to high 80's and latency will rise to around high 50s- low 60's...

(I have a gsync monitor,) so not sure if this makes it 'better' for me subjectively... I don't know what CPU/RAM mobo combo youre using.

(I'm on a 12700k OC to 4.9ghz on P, 3.8 on E. MSI liquid 4090 manual OC 150 core, 900mhz on memory.)

From my perspective with Path Tracing on with DLSS2 performance, DLSS3 Frame Gen at DLDSR 4k, (native 1440p monitor), feels pretty damn responsive.

Of course, if you toggle off path-tracing, and FPS rises well above 100-130fps, the game is super crisp-ier...

Perhaps you're just omega sensitive?

System Specs?

So this is what that looks like,

EVGA z690 Dark Kingpin
i9 12900k
Ryjiin II 360 AIO
DDR 5 32gig 6400
RTX MSI 4090 Liquid Suprim X
2x Samsung 980 Pro
EVGA 1300 Watt Titanium
Hyte y60 case

Now that is a glass case, with two liquid rads cooling the CPU and GPU, when I play games it peaks at 57 C. I bring that up because that is one of the most common optimization issues people bring up when bashing on a game for optimization. I optimized my metal and soft and I get 57C under full load.
This is not even as good as my specs could be for this motherboard, but here is about what I get on an Aorus gaming 4K UHD 43" monitor.

Playing the game at resolution 3840 x 2160
All graphics Highest,
Pyscho RT,
DLSS set to auto

My game will hit 144 FPS
Now just how many pixels is that?
3840x2160x144=1,194,393,600
So my PC is pushing 1 billion 194 million and 393 thousand pixels per second.
That is a hellava lot of pixels per second.

Anyway, pathtracing its 124 FPS.
But I'm not really interested in Path Tracing because its a tech demo unlike Pyscho, but the reality is that my PC can push Path Tracing.

Now if your struggling or the game feels sluggish well that can easily be a few different issues with your PC.
1) it very likely could be your build, your parts man.
2) it could be the software, BIOS, Drivers, and/or Firmware that you did not upgrade.
3) Settings in Windows and/or Nvidia Control Panel.

But the assuming the first two are perfect,
Did you go to Nvidia Control Panel and find under "Manage 3D Settings"
"Low Latency Mode" <----Cause you really need to turn that on, it seriously removes a lot of the latency for inputs, when using "Frame Generation" feature.

Other than that, game works fine for me.

The last time I saw a guy going on about his 4090 not living up to the hype.

(bear in mind, even my 4090 is not living up to the hype! WHY? Because I have it paired with a 12900K and only 32 gigs of RAM! IF I wanted the best performance out of 4090 I would have a 13900K and 64 gigs of RAM, even then it would still be gimped! Because the 4090 over-runs all CPU's on the current market)

He had a 12400 or some such low end low core CPU.
Paired with 2x8 DDR4 3200 Ram kit.
With a sub-optimal power supply that if it got stressed was likely going to lead right to a crash.

And no matter how much anyone tried to tell him that 16 gigs of DDR4 on only 2 Dimms was not enough, he would just point to some antique video that was wrong in the first place that claimed 16 gigs was all you needed! Even though with DDR 4 your almost always better off with 4 dimms for optimal performance in gaming. Even though everyone knows the whole market has moved on to needing 32 gigs as a minimum starting point and that 64 is still better but is a matter of diminishing returns which does not mean bad.

There were 11 pages to his thread to sift through to figure out the true state of his actual computer because no one thought to ask,

"What are your full system Specs"

My specs
TUF GAMING B550-PRO
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core Processor, 4200 Mhz
16GB Corsair Memory
GIGABYTE Gaming GeForce RTX 4090 24GB GDDR6X
EVGA 1000 Watt

Thank you for the tips. I did limit my FPS to 60 in Nvidia Control, that actually did seem to improve a lot, know some people think that's crazy but I'm used to vsync at 60fps. Still some trouble areas, for example I get terrible hitchiness in V's apartment complex even at lowest settings at 1080p for no explainable reason.

I noticed that low latency setting but it I didn't touch it as it said it was relating to gsync monitors so I didn't think it'd do anything for me, I'll try it out and see.

Awesome,

I looked up your Motherboard

4 x DIMM, Max. 128GB, DDR4 5100(O.C)/5000(O.C)/4866(O.C)/4800(O.C.)/4600(O.C)/4500(O.C)/4400(O.C)/4333(O.C.)/4266(O.C.)/4200(O.C.)/4133(O.C.)/4000(O.C.)/3866(O.C.)/3733(O.C.)/3600(O.C.)/3466(O.C.)/3400(O.C.)/3333(O.C.)/3200/3000/2800/2666/2400/2133 MHz Un-buffered Memory
Dual Channel Memory Architecture
ECC Memory (ECC mode) support varies by CPU.
* Refer to www.asus.com for the Memory QVL (Qualified Vendors Lists), and memory frequency support depends on the CPU types.

I advise you go to your forums for your board, and figure out how the experience is for people using 4 sticks of RAM and how it is for them with Overclocking.

I think you will find that using 4 sticks is fine on DDR 4.

DDR 4 is very cheap right now and you can get 4x16 3200 for cheap.
After that upgrade your going to find your machine is really able to stretch its legs in everything, including games.
DDR 4, if for some reason you need even cheaper....Go with 4x8 kit, should be about 50-80 bucks that gives you 32.

32 gigs of RAM is the new sweet spot, but 64 is the I dont have to think about it and I can just load whatever I want level of RAM.

Although you might find that looking through your forum posts on the website some people might suggest more radical amounts and speeds than I am suggesting here so in the interest of your not being disappointed please go find some AMD goru's on the website and pick their brain.

After getting enough RAM I suspect your sluggishness will completely disappear.

Also I did look at that specific AMD line of CPU, right now on Newegg the best 5000 series is only 350 bucks in the US, so if your interested might be worth a look.
More Cores will mean better performance for your overall system and games also 4090 loves more powerful CPU.

TUF GAMING B550-PRO

I think that is a great choice of a board btw,

Lots of upgrade potential and with the 4090 on there, you can skip a whole generation all the way to AM6 or intels 14/15th.

Probably even ride that all the way through an entire cycle of console generation which we just hit the new cycle! So 7 years just make a couple upgrades during that time an you just ride it till the next console release while playing everything at its fullest.

I think its possible man,
But of course there are caveats,
Gotta upgrade that RAM, best upgrade for you right now.

At some point its going to feel like your not getting enough FPS.
Well, that 4090 is a monster no top of the line CPU on the consumer market can tame it, so at some point you need to bring out the best CPU your motherboard can bring to bear against such a monster.
IF you do a CPU upgrade though...Cool it till the next generation or after the next console generation is on the horizon, before spending anything else on the PC.

As it is...The next generation of video cards is about 3 years off instead of 2 because the line up has been so ill-recieved that they added a whole year before bringing out RTX 5000 series. Heck man, there will likely be a whole super series before the 5000 comes out its been that badly recieved.

In the meantime, you have the best card in the world right now.
So figure out how to enjoy it.

Wow, thanks Gamefever, lol you've probably gotta be the most polite person I've ever seen on the steam forums. XD

Good tips here from everyone.

One process that always helps me: whenever I start a new game, I turn off EVERYTHING in my graphics options. Then I begin by setting my native resolution (2560 x 1600) and slowly, one-by-one, adding the bells and whistles to that. Yes, this experimentation can take a while, especially if the game has extensive visual options. But while not a cure-all, this slower process always helps isolate whatever graphical problem I might have.

Good luck with your experimentation. It'll be worth it-- Night City should be experienced in the fullest glory your machine has available.
