Am I actually on a timer after starting act 2, or can I still play my open world game like an open world game?
Cuz yeah. If I actually have to rush specific questlines *right* after the whole map unlocks, I'll be more than a little annoyed.

No timer,

The games "side quests" actually fill in a lot of the main story and mostly inform you of key points of the games world and many of them are point of fact filling in more information about the main story.

So its well worth doing the side quests and dont feel ashamed if you dont remember everything an miss some things about how such an such character ended up, happens to a lot of people especially the ones not expecting such details.

You'll probably notice the lack of timer, thats because there isn't one. It would be a huge glaring issue otherwise, no developer would design an open world game like that.

I wish the game had the option for it honestly.

No timer. And despite the main NPCs telling you to hurry, 'don't make me wait' kind of thing, they'll wait forever until you're ready. There are a couple of minor missions [very minor] that seem to time out if you don't get right to them...so don't keep Meredith waiting, and don't keep Mitch waiting when he calls you.

There's only a handful of side missions on a timer, one from Mitch, the one with the cops and Barry in your building, and one other I believe but can't think of which it is.

Mama Wells' mission is time sensitive I believe, once you call her.

As others have said, no, the game wil not stop you playing by timing you out.

Certain quests can be failed if you don't do them in time, pick them up before certain other quests or if you leave the nearby area tho.

Barry, who lives downstairs from you has a timer. First a timer before you can talk to him. And a timer for how long you have to finish his quest.

There is a quest in Pacifica that will disappear if you don't do it before a certain quest involving Judy's friend.
But don't worry, you can still complete the quest itself. It just changes it a little, and makes it no longer show up on the map.

You can fail a quest with Panam. If she calls you about something urgent (yes, she often sounds like the world is ending, but that's just her lol. You will likely recognise the difference) involving Saul, then you need to go over and sort that out. It's just one mission, but a storm is involved too, so it's important to get there and start that one.

And one with Rogue, where you pick her up for the quest. Don't leave your car, or leave her behind on that one (just stick to the plan) or she will get very annoyed with you. And you don't want to upset the top Fixer in all of NightCity lol.
(Seen YouTubers take her for a ride on that quest. Just to see how far they can push it. One drove the car into the Ocean and she just stood on the water, gave you a whithering look and ignored them lol.)

These are the only ones I can think of, and I've tried to be vague while giving enough info to help.

I forgot that's a timed one, guess I should get to that next as I've let it sit for a few other missions in my current run while I mop up side quests.

Takamura has been waiting at that market for 70 something hours so far, he can wait a bit longer I suppose.

The main story is implied to have a time limit, but there is no actual time limit.

Basically:
- As you complete more of the main story, V's status will worsen - that is the time limit.
- Otherwise, enjoy the game. Personally, I'd recommend doing everything except the main story first (Gigs, NCPD events, Collecting Shards, etc), then continuing the main story.

Problem with that is some of the gigs ect have extra content if Johnny is with you. Granted it's mostly an issue in Watson. There's at least two cyberpsycho's who he pops for. A quest near the docks in Northside. And I think a couple of Regina's gigs, I'm not sure.

Myself I do the ncpd points till I can do Regina's gig 'monster hunter' so I can trigger one of my mods (missing persons: Fixers hidden gems) and avoid all the other gigs and cyberpsycho's till after the heist. I can get to around level 8 or so just doing the police points and finding the Watson hidden gems can boost me to maybe 10 with my mod.
Then I do the heist and unlock the rest of the map.
Guess it depends on if you like interacting with Silverhand or not lol. I do enjoy him being around myself.
