Cyberpunk 2077
Is the game depressing?(minor spoiler)
I was planning on playing Cyberpunk 2077 but after watching Edgerunners I'm not sure. If you enjoyed the anime I'm not saying you're wrong but I absolutely hated it. Personally I'm not a fan of media who's writers mistake depressing twists for complex writing but when I was younger I use to enjoy that kind of thing.
Anyways I was hoping those of you who have finished the game could tell me if it has the same kind of story that makes me hate life.
Thanks for any info:cybereye:

In short. Yes. It's absolutely depressing. There is no other way around it. If you're not in a good mental state yourself or you're sensitive to dark subject matters avoid this game.

If you can handle it and you let yourself be immersed, to truly feel the game? It's the best gaming narrative experience I've had. Though I'm an absolute sucker for sad endings. Cyberpunk left me in a state of existentialism for a day or two. It was rough but an experience I'd love to feel again for the first time. Only a few good books have managed to evoke the same.
I think the story's got its funny or brighr moments but as it was said before its a cyberpunk (as a genre of games or books) which is a critique of technological development and emphasis of negatives sides, environmental degradation, capitalism/ consumption critique leading to the world damnation. What would you expect then?
not really. there's some like bro that's crazy moments. its mostly fun doin some wild outta pocket ♥♥♥♥ you know

That's not depressing that's life in Night City !!

There's a sentence that is burned into your head if you play the tabletop, to make sure you always kill off over-powered or really built up characters that are having an easy time of it...

THE FUTURE IS DISPOSABLE

You frequently just kill off players characters when they're too good, or just run their mouths too much. "Nope sorry you're gone, you wanna tear that character sheet or you want me to do it?" :moxes: You are in fact encouraged to do so, and no one who actually understands the game, gets mad about this. As long as it wasn't vindictive, a gamerunner who's got a grudge, that's how it's played. You are disposable. Your crew, your choombas, are remembered for their glorious deaths! Not how they lived.

So if that bothers you? Yes it's depressing I guess. As depressing as reality, anyway.

I hate the fact the PC/console version players don't grasp this, that there's not perma-death that erases all your saves. Maybe like 6 deaths "lives" since you could have a certain chrome that stands you back up magically if you get near 0 health, fixing all your injuries instantly (yawn). Because sure why not?

But at least with a line of 6 skulls at the top with half of them already blacked out, might drive home that you're going to die, soon, and nothing matters. People could cheat to give themselves lives bcak, but the fact they had to cheat will be fine, it still brings home the point "ah frackin' scop I was about to die!".

:6thstreet:Death Approaches:6thstreet:

Someone's favourite sourcebook was 'listen up, you primitive screwhead's' lol 😎 I think.
And maybe also 'Paranoia' was also a fave game (six skulls, six clones...)
There is a crossover for that by the way, its hilarious to read. Only got part 2, but damn, its funny just to read the thing.

We used to have a little hope.
If a character made it far enough, they could retire.
You rolled up a new one, who the old one took under their wing for a story or two. After that, the GM kept them as a sort of NPC. Used them against you sometimes (lol....kidnapping, plot hooks ect) but occasionally if it made to story better, they could do a 'Barry Burton' and save your hide. (*toss you a rocket launcher sort of thing)
Course....that usually ended up dropping you into even deeper sh*tstroms but that was part of the fun.
Not really, unlike edgerunner, you can at least decide your own fate here. It give a perfect sense for RP value, it kinda limited at times and although your action should have a very significant consequence, the game sometime dont realy reward you or punish you for it which is sucks. There is no best ending in this game yet since it is nightcity probably never will since folk like us will never have those kind of ending in nightcity.
This game is set in a dystopian future society, where corporations have a lot of power, crime is rampant and it is taking a toll on humanity. So yes, i would say it is depressing, if you get immersed you might feel depressed. It also reflects the system in the world we are living today, and where it might be headed.

There is a difference between seeing depressing = complex, and depressing + complex. Either way, not your setting. Cyberpunk settings are genuinely all about depressing settings. Amazingly, you can't write about an evil corporation devaluing life to the point of almost worthlessness, and it be as happy as a Disney movie.

Not all games are for all people. You disliked Edgerunner. I dislike you for disliking it. Does that make both of you bad products? No. It is opinion and personal taste. Same here. You said you don't like Cyberpunk games essentially, so no you will not like this Cyberpunk game. If you said you hated banana flavours, and then asked if you should eat a banana, I would also recommend the answer of "no".
That's a whole lot of defensiveness over a game, anime, and genre. Just saying.

Also, not every Cyberpunk series, show, movie, or game has extremely dark endings, plenty are grey. In any case, another ending is being worked on; perhaps it will lean more towards a grey ending.
Idk I thought it was pretty funny:cybereye:

I haven't watched Edgerunners, but I have seen clips and know roughly how it ends. I'd say it's not as depressing as Edgerunners. Edgerunners actually looked a lot more depressing. There are multiple endings you can get, some are considered depressing while others not so much.

I remember there was a poll on CDPR's Official Forum where about 70% of users wanted to see a DLC that added a new ending that was happier. I remember some coin the term "Broken Steel this game" in reference to Fallout 3's DLC that changed the "You sacrifice yourself to save everyone" ending and extended the storyline.
I'm actually playing through Fallout 3 right now. Was walking up to Tenpenny Tower while reading this.

Tenpenny Tower in Fallout 3? Theres nothing more sad and depressing in the gaming world:(

Sad I didn't have more gouls to shoot down:cybereye:
If you want to consider the Suicide Decision as a ending, I think that ending shows how such a decision negatively impacts all those who were close to V. I personally went though a dark time and came out knowing that I will never choose such an end for myself because I realize how it would impact others who care about me.

Life will come to an end. We all have to die someday. Some of us might get to live long lives, but some of us have our lives cut short by tragedy. We never know when Death taps our shoulder and says that our time has come.

Jacky didn't even have a chance to say Goodbye to his mum or his girl V gets a heads up on his demise and have a choice on how to face it. How your V faces it is up to you.
Not much similarity between Edgerunners and the game besides having cyberpunk elements. The game does have some depressing moments, but I think the show took into an extreme with the situations that you don't experience firsthand as the player.
But generally, depending on how deep you get into the game, the culmination of environments, world view, story, violence (it is a very violent game), and characters could take you to a dark place if you think about it too much and too deeply.
But it is an open world game, and its very easy to let loose and play it as a game as opposed to being stuck in the darker narrative. I spent a big chunk of time just taking photos of the city, environments, vehicles, characters because the graphics are phenomenal.
Ultimately, the world of cyberpunk is a dystopian future of humanity at its lowest point. The game does want to show you what could happen to us if we let evil people control our lives with technology, and if we let technology take control of us. Its a game that should be played, because there's not been a game like this since Deus Ex series, which I think the original is still the hallmark of cyberpunk games purely based on the narrative and the story.
