If you can handle it and you let yourself be immersed, to truly feel the game? It's the best gaming narrative experience I've had. Though I'm an absolute sucker for sad endings. Cyberpunk left me in a state of existentialism for a day or two. It was rough but an experience I'd love to feel again for the first time. Only a few good books have managed to evoke the same.
Someone's favourite sourcebook was 'listen up, you primitive screwhead's' lol 😎 I think.
And maybe also 'Paranoia' was also a fave game (six skulls, six clones...)
There is a crossover for that by the way, its hilarious to read. Only got part 2, but damn, its funny just to read the thing.
We used to have a little hope.
If a character made it far enough, they could retire.
You rolled up a new one, who the old one took under their wing for a story or two. After that, the GM kept them as a sort of NPC. Used them against you sometimes (lol....kidnapping, plot hooks ect) but occasionally if it made to story better, they could do a 'Barry Burton' and save your hide. (*toss you a rocket launcher sort of thing)
Course....that usually ended up dropping you into even deeper sh*tstroms but that was part of the fun.
Tenpenny Tower in Fallout 3? Theres nothing more sad and depressing in the gaming world:(
Life will come to an end. We all have to die someday. Some of us might get to live long lives, but some of us have our lives cut short by tragedy. We never know when Death taps our shoulder and says that our time has come.
Jacky didn't even have a chance to say Goodbye to his mum or his girl V gets a heads up on his demise and have a choice on how to face it. How your V faces it is up to you.
But generally, depending on how deep you get into the game, the culmination of environments, world view, story, violence (it is a very violent game), and characters could take you to a dark place if you think about it too much and too deeply.
But it is an open world game, and its very easy to let loose and play it as a game as opposed to being stuck in the darker narrative. I spent a big chunk of time just taking photos of the city, environments, vehicles, characters because the graphics are phenomenal.
Ultimately, the world of cyberpunk is a dystopian future of humanity at its lowest point. The game does want to show you what could happen to us if we let evil people control our lives with technology, and if we let technology take control of us. Its a game that should be played, because there's not been a game like this since Deus Ex series, which I think the original is still the hallmark of cyberpunk games purely based on the narrative and the story.
