While I will eventually play to an ending, I have yet to do so in 700+ hours of play. I haven't even done all of the gigs, nor completed any side quests. With 1.7 and the expansion coming, I'll be playing to an ending and playing through all of the other content (gigs, sidequests). Until then though, I'll be holding off.
So what drove me to put so much time into this game, despite never once playing to an ending nor completing all of the gigs and side quests. The world, or more specifically, the modded world.
In the modded world, I can:
- Eat at a vendor with animations.
- Drink at a vendor with animations.
- Sit anywhere.
- Invest in stocks.
- Have a companion follow me around, fight with me, and say some dialog as well.
- I visit the female Joytoy and the scene lasts much longer than the vanilla game. Just more immersion basically.
- More mature ads.
- I can play the shooting gallery and enjoy it whenever I want.
- I can tune my vehicle and even have my own lines of code that I've added to the mod.
- I can steal and sell cars.
- I can play arcade games.
I'll stop there, but my main point is that an immersive world, via mods, is what has kept me playing.
Even to this day, I still play this game at least once or twice a week.
There's no way to make a melee Solo into a Runner w/ tech... but of course in a computer game, you can just half-ass all the stats and still come out OK, with a workable character, because you don't want to someone whining and crying about how they can't do anything , how it takes 200 bullets to drop one person but they get killed in 2. Etc.
That's always been my idea for the best update - ULTRA-NOVA Mode. Not just much more lethal, but way less flexibility. And expose the die rolls, I want to see on-screen if I hit.
But anyway, how? Easy! - By pretending the game is harder than it is... pretending there's no respec but you must live with your choices. Pretending there's no reload to reverse a bad mission decision, pretending there's no internet to google a wiki about what to do before you do it. (like to know where unique weapons are you never saw before.) Et cetera.
That's how. Pretending.
Another reason is mostly those roleplaying playthrough. I dont do it because recently there are just too many game that I want to play. Playing this game for 300hr+ is not that hard and completely understandable.
I understand perfectly that others may not see things the same way, and that's fine.
Challenge accepted! IMO CDPR could have done more to vary the way gigs and etc. could be done. Incentives...double payouts by stingy Regina for live cyberpsychos...bonus payouts for stealth, or for jobs where you don't fire a shot in an explosive environment where you have to do it bare-knuckle style...all kinds of things. I like the boxing matches, the races and even the shooting competitions...too bad there weren't more. This is already a great game...the ways it could be added to are endless.
If you fancy more stealth gameplay....maybe this might tickle your funny bone?

Stealthrunner - Stealth gameplay expansion.
You get rewards for being totally undetected (ghost) for pacifist and other gameplay style stuff.
Personally, I just enjoy walking around the City. Got close to 800hrs now and am getting familiar with Little China, Northside and Kabuki to the point I don't need to use the map, I recognise areas of the game just by looking on a YouTube vid XD
What gets me about games (and their players) is.... How some cannot help themselves but min-max. Then cry about 'game is too easy'
Then don't get the best in slot. Don't use the best build. Stop using the best weapons.
I find it confusing sometimes, that folks can't just stop themselves.
I'll wear white grade gear, pick a weapon that's sub optimal for its looks, choose skills for flavour over the best, pick sub optimal perks ect.
(Not just this game. My bank is filled with gray grade junk items I just like the style of in mmo games XD)
