Has anyone else here played the original RPG?
I started playing tabletop RPGs when I was in the Navy (late 90s) and one of the games my shipmates and I played for a bit was cyberpunk. I loved it! When I saw this game came out, I bought it right away.

There are so many themes from the original game that are in this one so that it feels like you're 57 years in the future (the original RPG took place in 2020).

Unfortunately, my friends and I never played 2020 for long (we wound up settling on RIFTS instead) so I don't remember a whole lot. But, it feels like they worked hard to make the worlds match. I also recently started watching Edgerunners and the anime did a great job with it too.

Yeah, and for what its worth the old RPGs (2013 and 2020), the new RPG ("Red" set in 2045) and the video game (obviously in 2077) are one continuous timeline as per the games original creator (who worked with CDPR on the video game).

You can still get some of the 2020 books from the original company:

And this is the new (2045) game. (Warning though - they streamlined it for "modern audiences" so theres a lot less nitty gritty in the guns and numbers than 2020...)

OK...totally didn't know there was another one set in 2045. Damn, I'll have to find it! I have do say, though, I love the consistency of the timeline. Makes it feel like it's an alternate reality where before 1988 everything was almost the same, and after that things changed (I say 1988 because that's when 2020 was released). The game developers didn't try to "fix" the timeline, and that's just awesome.

I've never played the tabletop, but I did DM Shadowrun once upon a time in school until I got told my stories were too dark and disturbing. ... Took that as a compliment. 😎

Yeah, and now between the original games, the (start of) the Red stuff, and the implicit 2077 lore, theres a lot :)

Heres a loose timeline someone put together:

(You were Navy - so for sake of history, NC is Morro Bay California :) )

And Mike Pondsmith himself still pops up on the internet to lay down the law ha:

I played the table top in the early 90's. I was in the army at the time. Only played a handful of sessions, but I had a blast. My character was a Solo who wielded a katana and wolver's. I really wish they had been able to implement those into the game.

Long ago.... I remember bits and pieces. I was abit more active with D&D, DC Hero's.
Hard to find a group for Cyberpunk.
