Modders already do that on Patreon and such. Ultimately it’s their work and they have the choice whether they want to monetize it or leave it free.
Aside from that, publishers have in the past tried to monetize mods[www.polygon.com]. It went as well as you would expect.
Mods better off has Standard free and paid premium version of the mods or paid add on.
Patreon good but not everyone keen to pay monthly for mods they use once.
bethesda already tried this, it didnt go so well for them
Similar thing happen in FOSS projects.
Currently, there are no right way to monetize mods and that's OK.
Even if Todd were to do something 100% beneficial people will never trusted them. Which is understandable because they did ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up before.
