Would be equally awkward to suddenly get "the first Johnny" talk way deeper in to the story. Very hard to predict what people choose to do first, particularly when Tom's Diner is very close to your apartment, no car necessary. Which I guess organically is a better/intended introduction to Johnny as he "decides" to help you there.
Any interaction in the open world itself (outside of actually story arc) by nature kinda have to be neutral time line wise.
Yeah I noticed that awkwardness too on my latest save where I decided to go straight for my car.
Yeah, i noticed that was well. There are a few continuity bugs like that.
