I've tried doing things the other way, i.e. upgrading first and then ranking up, but it doesn't make any difference to the final result.
I tried the O Five when I got it but didn't much care for it. The explosion feature seemed neat, but in practice it meant I couldn't shoot through enemies and hit others on the other side like a regular SPT32 could, and the explosion isn't really big enough to justify it as enemies have to standing right next to each other to get hit with splash.
I think in terms of personal preference, I'd have to rank the Sniper Rifles as follows:
#1. Breakthrough
#2. SPT32 GRAD
#3. Overwatch
#4. Nekomata
#5. Ashura
#6. O Five
[Edit]: Changed my mind. Overwatch's inability to shoot through cover is annoying as hell, and the silencer confers basically no advantage at all. SPT32 GRAD is just better, sucks to say.
ok man. overwatch does also 100 less dmg than spt32 and breakthrough , shame.
Honestly though, turns out the inability to punch through cover is the dealbreaker for Overwatch. I'm really disappointed by that.
I wonder if there is a mod to fix it. I should check.
[Edit]: Well lookie lookie...

There IS a fix!
Sometimes it is just like that. The way the game is "intended" to be by the devs and the way it is better off being aren't always the same thing.
I really should note here: picking between a circumstantially useful trait, and a massively useful trait PLUS higher damage PLUS higher headshot damage isn't even close to being a contest. The base SPT32 outperforms the iconic, unique version of it so much it isn't even funny.
Now see, generally speaking, unique weapons are supposed to be BETTER versions of the original. Overwatch has turned into an inferior version in almost every possible way... as has O Five for that matter.
So yeah, a fix to bring the odds slightly back towards even is more than reasonable.
When I first made this post, I didn't even know about the walls thing. I was just comparing the Overwatch to the SPT32 on the basis of the huge damage difference, and wondering if it was worth it (because the silencer really isn't all that great in practice)... The walls thing, without the fix to correct it, definitely sets the answer as a complete NO.
