Buy, loot, or wait?
Hey guys, just starting off in Night City and I was wondering how to spend my Eddies best.

Context: I am still very early in the story, about to meet Panam, but due to doing a lot of Fixer stuff my Street Cred is already around 25 and character level around 20.

Question: Should I buy items from vendors or just scrounge together stuff I find? What items scale, which don't? It is probably not a great idea to spend 1/4 of my Eddies on a Legendary pistol because I will out level it soon after, correct? What about Cyberware? Does Legendary Cyberware at Ripperdocs scale to my level or is it fixed? Basically - how do I not waste my money on stuff that will become obsolete quickly?

Thanks for the answers.

Depends a lot on your build, esp. whether or not you're planning to invest in crafting.
Overall, I think the only gear you really want to buy is cyberware.
As a hacker, I usually learn quickhack crafting and then buy a rare or epic deck as quickly as I can (and then later a legendary Netwatch deck again as quickly as I can.) As a melee char there seems to be a lot of cyberware you want and typically can't buy as early as you want to (because cyberware is gated behind street-cred and body/reflex attribute requirements. streetcred determines both the cyberware you can buy and the cyberware even in stock). Double-jump leg cyberware I _always_ buy as early as I can afford the kind of secondary needs, because it's a game changer.
Other stuff, I normally either craft or loot.

You can make huge amounts of eddies crafting Threat analyses and selling them then buying components and making more.

You can upgrade weapons so buy a legendary but make sure it's one you want and upgrade it every few levels. A lot of people miss that you can upgrade stuff.

Cyberware, you can buy better by your Street cred getting higher. Same goes for the thing you put in them. The things they do never change but you get more slots for stuff and for hacking too by going from epic to legendary.

Also you can sell your unused Cyberware back to the ripperdoc.

Good question! It all depends on what you need for your character of course. From my first playthrough, I came to realize that you don't need to spend your E$ on cars...you'll get good cars for free, and I'd buy only one extra apartment, if that [love that loft apartment and the Japantown is nice too]. You are better off waiting to find a good gun [it should have at least a couple of Mod slots] and upgrading it when you can, than paying big bucks for a Legendary...some of which aren't actually too hot. Also, you can craft high-level weapons and it's pretty cheap to do that. On the other hand, as far as I can tell, you are better off buying high-level cyberware than trying to 'trade up'...that's my plan anyhow.

Crafting can get your fast and early cash, just craft green nekomatas (green sniper rifles) and sell them, they do occupy a lot of space though and the fire jackers are more profitable and less weight but I can't remember where you get the blueprint for it, so until you find that blueprint just craft nekomatas and sell them in traders or cashdeposits. If you want to go melee you can have mantis blades which are really awesome but you will need some cool and reflexes perks to be high. With reflexes you can also choose between handguns, blades and assault (mostly assault and sniper rifles and smg too) you can also have power fists but I never tried that myself, if you want to go that way you need to invest more into the Body skills and perk, you can also get a lot of money by hacking stuff but you need some intelligence for that, you can also make hybrid builds between all of these and more, for example now I'm using mantis blades and going stealth with pistols and assault rifles as backup, got a few implants before the start of the main quest so I'm well rigged for now

You can just take a look around, check out random alleys, out of the way spots, etc. There's a ton of legendary clothing you can find and get for free. There's videos on Youtube, too, where to find legendary items, even for lower levels, but if you'd rather find them on your own I'd say just go exploring. It's amazing what you can find in the middle of th desert ...

These legendary items should be picked when maxxed lvl because they will "spawn" at your current level when you pick them, but I'm not sure

The guide above shows where you can find them, but you really should wait until you get to lvl 50 before grabbing them

And this is the list of iconic gear, like silverhands unique pistol and others, there's no info where to get these weapons but you can always google the one you really want in youtube or smt

I didn't and just upgraded them. Worked fine for me, both pre- and post 1.5. And judging from some of those I recently picked up in the Badlands, not all of them spawn at your level. At least if they do, then I don't know why I gotta upgrade and upgrade and upgrade that one jacket I found (at lvl 50) the way I have to to get its armor anywhere even close to my other jackets. Been driving all around town to buy upgrade components for it and it still can be upgraded.

Unless you are using one of the money exploits. Don't waste it on buying Weapons and armor. You will want to spend your money on Cyberware and cars (Especially if going for achievement). Cyberware doesn't scale, They are just locked behind Req such as your SC level or ability level. You can normally craft weapons and armor better than you can buy.

To be able to craft legendary stuff he needs a high level of technical though, and yeah, agree the money is more well spent in cyberware, implants and body modifications, I just did the cars achievement to do the 100% and it did take a while even with the soda exploits, now it must be tougher to get that achievement

Edit: you can get a lot of cash if you dismantle everything and craft stuff like green nekomatas or the fire jacket, but you will need enough technical skills to craft them, don't know for sure how many but I think you need at least 4 or 5? You will need the blueprints too

I am a bit confused now, is legendary gear unique? Or just iconic gear?

There is some legendary gear as I showed you above, I didn't knew that until a while ago and going to try to get the netrunner asap, guess I have to wait for lvl 50, I might have picked one or two but never noticed

Buying Legendary can be good, give or take how you spend your eddies and crafting.
You can upgrade it as you level, and it'll be decent. Mostly if you find one with Good Stat bonuses you like. Using pick up weapons works, You may not always get one with nice bonus. If you have a go to weapon thou, It works.

Most stuff I break I down, Inless worth something in eddies, I vendor. (mostly anything worth 100-200+)

Some of eddies will just be spent on crafting parts your missing, so you can keep good guns upgrades.
Mods for armors are good buys.
Much like GTAV, If your looking to buy all cars... save the Eddies.

Crafting at 18, Means you can buy Crafting Components, Make Certain weapons, Sell them for more then value of what it takes to make them. Don't think its been patched. Its an easy money making method.

The best value while having a low and minimum technical skill is being able to craft green items, specially the nekomata (green sniper rifle) due to the cost/sell value of it, I've made most of my money out of that way, you spend low components while having a decent sell ratio, but if you plan to have bigger technical skill then it will be even easier to make money
