Yeah, I really don't like either one of those. Shadowrun had the same issue with a few of their slang terms- chummer was the one I really hated from that setting.

Welcome to how anyone over 35 feels when talking to gen Z.

Ironic that actual slang is even stupider.

QFT.^^

Meanwhile, people in the real world use "cringe" as if it were an adjective and nobody seems to bat an eye. I'll take fictional slang/abbreviations over that anytime.

I thought people have been saying sitch since before cyberpunk. I think detes may predate it too.

Here, here. "Impactful" has been getting up my nose lately. But all's nova chooms.

just an fyi...the slang was created in the 1980s by Mike Pondsmith. the first use of this slang didnt happen till 1988. Cp2020 which is the source for CP77 came out in 1990. So yeah it might be a little outdated or even weird to you. But all words are made up and these words were made up for the world Mike created. Not really meant to be used in our daily lives. Even though some fit in so perfectly...i forget i am not playing sometimes. well...time to go see my input.

i'm ok with some of the slang like gonk and choomba, but sitch and detes just rub me the wrong way. Maybe it's just the way regina spams those words over and over that gets on my nerves.

Which is funny, since I've actually heard detes and sitch used in public before. These days you have lit and fam and poggers.

i've never heard detes or sitch used IRL. Fam sure.

I was thinking about this more and I guess the common thread that irks me about sitch and detes is that they are shorthand for already existing words, whereas gonk and choom cannot be conveyed precisely with any other word. Detes is clearly shorthand for details, and sitch is for situation, but gonk is like vaguely a prick, or a douche, or someone who is gullible I gather from context clues and I think choom is like boyfriend/girlfriend/partner/homie.

It gets my panties in a bunch because what are you going to shorten next?

Part of it is inherent in the setting, cyberpunk, which is a sort of exaggerated example of the same ♥♥♥♥ we see today. People styling their hair, dying it, crazy clothing ideas, body piercings and tattoos and prosthetics; Not all of which are remotely practical. People just trying to be unique and 'different' and set themselves apart from the teeming, seemingly infinite masses of people, ever more pressured by the insane lengths you have to go to find some form of originality in a world where everything has been done millions of times over on the daily.

I don't mind the slang, I found it to be semi-world building

There were a couple slang words that I didn't even understand for the longest time until I played enough for the context. I didn't mind

Most was intuitive like preem, or klept

The one I had the most issue with was "delta". Like, does that mean "let's dip" or "let's depart?" Seems very cyberpunk-ish but I was confused. I knew it meant "to leave", but yeah even cyberpunk wiki has an incomplete list of slang words

I'd argue Eddies was pretty good. Show me the eddies. Reminds me of malfunctioning eddie in futurama, and the legend of Fast Eddie, the pool hustler, not the guitarist, but he was neat too.
