I thought they cancelled the online cyberpunk thing?

Multiplayer was never "promised". It was an idea CDPR had suggested as a possible stand-alone game. Then they dropped that idea and are considering ways to implement multiplayer into future projects.
Weaver Jan 2, 2022 @ 3:53pm
CDPR loudly hyped, talked about, and showed off all sorts of things to get pre-orders and generate interest, but put a *may not reflect final product* disclaimer on everything that meant they could of shown whatever and not be legally responsible for it. Then with much less fanfare quietly walked back or pulled the plug on half the features they showed off or talked about.
What's sad is the people who defend this, apparently they are fine with companies marketing outright lies as long as they put a disclaimer in that they may be lies.
This is how it has been for years industry standard that advertised *in game gameplay footage* always looks ten times better than the actual finished product. And people say "oh well everyone knows the footage is always bs" and excuse it, instead of having a problem that lying to consumers goes without consequences. That apathetic acceptance of crappy business practices is why we now loot box, microtransaction, day one paid dlc, and pay to win filled games.
Anyhow, I'm sure someone will think it is absurd and be offended by the idea that I companies should be actually honest and not hide behind technically legal but clearly shady business practice.

tbh despite any flak cd projekt red gets, they were and still are one of the few developers that actually care about making good products. With cyberpunk and everything it might not seem like it but it was mostly because it was rushed by investors. Bugs aside, it is still an amazing game along with the witcher 3. They stated that they only want multiplayer if it's fun and adds, not subtracts from the experience. I think it is very smart to not do online if the ones making it do not think it will be fun. The story is the only reason the game is any good anyways.

Gatto Nero's right. They have cancelled the standalone multiplayer. They are now looking to add it to both Witcher and Cyberpunk via something smaller. There's no time frame on that and there's no details given beyond it'll be in small steps to test what works for players and what doesn't. They have been hiring staff with experience of FPS online multiplayer, for what that is worth. From the datamining, there's suggestions of a PvP arena and co-op heist but that's obviously a long way from either actually happening even if the interpretation of what the datamining has found is correct.

That was cancelled some time ago.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out why. Cyberpunk 2077 was just much less than what was promised. There are elements there that are stellar, but even a year later it's missing so much content. Not even just promised content, but basic features that any open world game should have today.

When Rockstar launched GTA Online in 2013 it was coming from a well established and critically acclaimed background. Not to mention GTA V was flying off the shelves at the time. Its open world was and still is revolutionary as well as unmatched in terms of scope.

So much so that it's still printing money 8 years later.

I imagine CDP wanted a share of that pie, and fans were willing to give them it. There's really no alternative to GTA Online, and there's a lot that fans have issue with in that game (especially on PC).

However, you gotta have a solid main game in order to set off the costs of launching an online version of it.

Night City has so many problems. It's beautiful in terms of aesthetics, but aside from that it's far from immersive due to bugs. I don't even know how they'd tackle customization options.

We still can't even change our hair much less our bodies in the story mode, even over a year later. I still can't get over how wild that is in a game that shows people literally altering their faces in the promo material. Imagine setting your game in the future where people can alter themselves to look however they like, and the main character can't even change their hair color.

It's probably financially smarter for them to cut their losses and try to regain good will lost through expansions to the single player campaign (as well as bug fixes). This isn't their only major game either. They have to think about the Witcher too.

They eventually want to release a Witcher 4, and an online game could seriously take away from that. More than the pandemic and the disaster launch of Cyberpunk 2077 already did. Perhaps it's for the best. It leaves the door open for a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 because a successful online game is hard for a publisher to want to move on from, just look at how there's still no GTA 6 news.

But they didn't show "whatever". They showed the ideas they were excited about at the time while explicitly telling us everything was subject to change. That's how game development works. You start with a few ideas you want to put into your game, then those ideas develop, change and evolve during the process in often unpredictable ways. Yes, the disclaimer covers them legally. But it also actually tells us that their project is a work in progress where anything can change. It's important to understand that so you know to keep your expectations in check. The disclaimer is not a loophole that allows marketing to lie to you, it's the information you need to interpret what they show you properly.

No, not "half". Not by a long shot. A handful at best.

Straw man. I very much disagree with your attempts to villainize people through disingenuous narratives. I'm not defending CDPR, I'm criticizing you.

Don't get me wrong: I very much respect your opinion about the game, whatever it may be. Your experience is valid by default and I welcome and appreciate you talking about it. But now you're not only trying to push "us vs them" nonsense with CDPR as the witch, you're drawing a new line in the sand that includes anyone who disagrees with you or questions your logic. To me, that is a far bigger problem than game studios releasing games that disappoint you.

All the more reason why people should take it all with a grain of salt now.

Do you buy those games? I don't. I don't do microtransactions and never have. Basically the main time I get DLC is when it's included in a cheap bundle with the base game. I've literally never "paid to win" anything. Have you? I don't like these systems so I don't support them. They're existence does not affect me in any way.

Now, if you want to argue that it's immoral the way these systems exploit vulnerable people who are susceptible to psychological manipulation, I'd agree 100%. That is a serious subject worthy of discussion. But if you're going to talk about "crappy business practices" as an example of you not getting what you think you're entitled to, then I can't get on that page. The industry does not exist to cater to any particular demographic or personal preference. There are tons of different types of games that appeal to tons of different types of people.

From my perspective, they were honest with us. If anything, they were TOO honest. Where most studios keep their progress under wraps, CDPR felt chummy enough with their fans to inform them about the things they were working on as they were working on them. They explicitly told us that it was a work in progress and anything could change, but people chose to consider it a "promise" anyway and then claim to have been lied to after things changed (just like they suggested would happen).

Try using google to find some information to your questions. Unless you are seeking somethingelse.
