PS: Maybe the problem is that your generation (or "our", I should say) is too used to being "the chosen one" and the power fantasy that comes along with it, so when a more mature and realistic game comes along, where you, as an individual, can't completely change the fate of an entire world, everyone loses their minds.
It has a progression tree and core stats.
It has multiple choice missions.
It has character customization and gear with stats.
Diablo is a hack and slash looter RPG
Borderlands is a looter shooter RPG lite
Jagged Alliance is a tactical rpg.
This is what happens when you make hybrid games.
Instead of whining and fighting about the definition, make constructive posts and tell us what you would like added to the game without sounding like a kid.
By the OP's definition, Pong was a RPG. You're playing the role of a ping-pong player.
TBF, with today's standards I'd say it's a borderline RPG. With standards from 20 years ago there's no way it could be remotely considered RPG.
Guess it comes down to "when you come from" :p
When people say something is an RPG, they're considering RPG as the primary genre of that title. Having RPG elements does not make a game an RPG. Madden 2020 has RPG elements, I don't think you'll find anyone who seriously categorizes it as an RPG.
But people on this forum are watering down what it means to be an RPG to the point where Pong would qualify as an RPG.
i saw a pic somehwere of the game's own twitter account change the bio of the game from "RPG" to "action adventure" in may of 2019
Nowadays you have all kinds of TTRPGs. From Story driven to dungeon runs, from heavy rulesets, to almost no rules.
in Short, even in TTRPGs you can't find consensus on what is required for RPG, it all depends on the players. There even are systems, that don't need a DM/GM
So how is anyone expecting any definitive standards for Computer RPGs?
What makes a RPG a RPG is if people actually Role Play. There simply is no golden definition for RPG and no Authority that can set standards what is and isn't an RPG.
In the end everyone has to decide that for themself, same as I have to decide wether or not a dungeon romp or a story based D&D session is the one I enjoy playing.

CP2077 tries to do too much and spreads itself thin. It doesn't do any one thing well.
