Am I the only one who hates the story?
First of all, I wanted to say I was hyped for the game to come out since 2014 but I still had reasonable expectations.

One of the main reasons I'm already bored of this game is the story. I don't like any of the characters and when you know your decisions don't matter, it feels like I'm watching a 25 hour long movie. V and Johnny are both very annoying and hard to relate to. Characters will just pop up out of no where and they expect us to care if something happens to them. Ie. when that one girl, the doll one, dies and we're supposed to be so upset and torn up about it when we met her 5 minutes ago. Also the 6 month later montage is complete bs and makes me think the game was super rushed because I would have love to play in those missions and learn the city with V.

Another thing I hate is the lifepaths. CDPR showed off these paths like it would change something but it cements the idea very early that your decisions don't matter at all. It would be cool to be able to mod cars as a Nomad, or better at fighting as a streetkid and I doubt it would be hard to implement into the game. Just something to add a little more incentive to play another run of the game.

The romance options are so 2D and just shoehorned in so people can simp for Paman. Its as easy as 1,2,3. 1: tell them you are dying. 2: they ♥♥♥♥ you. 3: they leave until the climax of the game. It's so dumb and is another reason why the game should've been delayed

It's a shame that the "RPG" is barley an "RPG" at all. Story sucks, characters are plain and forgettable, Johnny is constantly spewing anticorp propaganda so I don't want to like him and the story falls flat. I don't understand what went wrong. I'll leave you with one question.

Who is the antagonist of this game?

Yorinobu? Johnny? Night city itself? That's the whole point of the story, V is in a cesspool way above his/her head and has to make sense of all this and figure out who to trust and how to survive. The whole point is that nothing is quite clear cut.

Even the Corpo = bad isn't that clear cut because of Hanako and Takemura (at least where I'm at in the story so far, please no spoiler) and how hateful Johnny is although he's anti-corpo.

you still can't put a pin on it. It shows lazy writing and a confusing story. The fact you can't say x person or y corp is concerning because it feels like going back and forth with no real progression anywhere. It feels like the game is dragging you around to see all of the cool stuff but they don't allow you to see it on your own. That's why i said it feel like a movie because you have no real say in any decision.

The story and the ending's are not a strong point for the game I agree, but developing character attachments has always been a sort of flacky thing in vid game's.

I agree though the attachment to the NPC is not really there in most of the scenario's. I just accept it and go with the flow, but I do see your point there.

You must be one of these people that were whining at the end of Disco Elysium: "wait it's the final bad guy?! 1/10! Terrible story!".

When the wise man points at the moon...

I did answer it. There is no clear antagonist because that's just how life is. But that's fine, I understand how tools don't really get that these days with "orange man bad" or "Biden is terrible". I guess we can't even have a story without a clear evil mustache twirling villain anymore without people complaining about it.

But this isn't real life, it's supposed to have a clear goal/objective. The only thing is get the chip out of your melon. You don't know how and are just bumbling around to find someone who can, but that makes the game feel like a huge fetch quest. The same problem was with The Last of Us 2. We go to a place, everyone is dead, leave. Go to a place, give us dumb mission, give thing, leave. It's bad writing and is very boring to play through

Truth be told I like some of the side stories more than the main story (like the weird crucifix one). I learned the more dialogue and less shooty personally makes the game OK. Also I wish the character backgrounds has an actual story.

Dragon Age Origins did this well for me especially the Dwarf origin story.

***I also agree that most of the characters here a douche bags so its really hard to relate. I relate more to the NPCs who are forced to work with the corpo in order to survive even if it means doing ♥♥♥♥♥♥ things. (And why I hate Johnny as a whole since instead of providing a solution to food, shelter and healthcare his solution is to blow the Corpo up? how will that help)

Even the witcher had a main goal with little missions to get to your goal faster

"Who is the antagonist of the game"
It's the city. The whole story has a much deeper meaning. You may fight against corpos with guns but psycologically you fight against the city. Dex even points to that when he asks you whether you prefer to die young in glory or wither out and die old.
Ansgar Odinson Dec 14, 2020 @ 8:08am
They actually removed "RPG" from the description of the game. Its not listed as an action adventure game.

How is the city the villain if Jackie even says everyone in the city is brother and sister and he loves the city. Plus, thats a boring villain
