The currency is called Eurodollars. So it's shortened as ED and the slang word for it is "eddies".

This isn't really a complicated thing. Cyberpunk 2077 is based on a pen and paper RPG from the late 80's and that game has always been very much "the future according to the 80's". The dialect and slang used are a reflection of the original source material. It is that simple.

I get the feeling that a lot of the folks who bought this game had no idea that it is based on that original RPG.

I remember when people liked fictional places having their own slang and terms to make the place seem more real for immersion. But I guess that goes against a certain groups current internet agenda.
