What is a defensive attack

In the blades perks there is a perk that increases damage of defensive attacks - anybody know what a defensive attack is?

I assume it's a timed block (the parry mechanic). If you block at the right time you counterattack. I haven't confirmed it's this yet though.

You need to block, when the fist, knife, sword or another melee weapon is close to hit you, then you counterattack him/her.

But usually i only choke them all, oh yeah, im Jack the Choker, hmm, wait, that sound bad ...
