It seems not all scopes attach to not all guns. I bought a scope for my pistol only to find it doesnt attach. I found a rifle later, and the scope attaches to that.

Go into inventory and when your equipped weapons appear click on the one you want to mount a scope to. Below the picture of the weapon you will see slots. Some weapons have more than 1 slot some have none. So I built a sniper rifle out of the craft menu and it has one slot for a scope. Then I went shopping and found 3 scopes that specifically said they were for a sniper rifle. Checked the stats and the prices and bought one.

Then back to the inventory window, click on the weapon, then click on the scope box and any scope you have in your pack that fits that weapon will appear. Click on the scope and pops into the box.

Yea I think we managed that much on our own. It was when the game said "Gun accepts scope" and has the "Scope" slot, and so I for example, bought a scope (It doesn't say what it does or does not equip to so I assumed universal) and my gun just ignores it.
I have since picked up a second scope, and my gun does allow me to put that in the slot, but specifically still does NOT allow me to put the first scope in said slot. /shrug

It's awkward, but you have to read the description of the scope. If it says "long scope" it only fits on assault rifles (maybe also shotguns? Haven't tested them). If it says "sniper scope" it only fits on sniper rifles (and that's the only type snipers can take). If it doesn't say long scope or sniper scope you should be able to put it on any gun accept a sniper rifle.

Sorry for over simplifying the procedure. But what SilverFayte says is how it works. The game advises that a weapon accepts item X. For example, I bought a mod and not one weapon I have will accept it. After carefully reading the description it clearly said that it increased melee damage by 4%; so while spelled out in black and white; the mod is clearly for a melee weapon and I had no melee weapons with a mod slot.

Now I am not saying you are not experiencing a bug of some sort. The game mechanics are not clearly defined in some areas.

Oh no I completely agree with you there. After I picked up a scope that was compatible, I settled on "This isn't a bug. This is just not well defined / explained mechanics". It is what it is though, thanks for your help :D Some games are more than happy to let you put your 8x Zoom sniper scope on a pistol. (Which is my dream in games) This one obviously isn't one of them. And I'll just have to live with that lol.

There is a pistol scope though that identifies threats by colors and its for a pistol
