That said, not a big deal for me. Plenty of other games even let you choose a name and then disregard it; Mass Effect, South Park, Dragon Age... all with character creation, all with a fixed nickname. Not new in the industry. Certainly not a big deal.
Happens a lot in actual TTRPG's too, you will create a character, name them, maybe even give them a nickname... then the rest of the players will ignore it, call you a new nickname they came up with, or just outright call you by your class/role.
I don't see why it matters, if your chosen name isn't going to be referenced in-game anyway.
And I don't care about name in this game... And actually also for this whole look customization... I could Play whatever look character they make. Like I played Witcher.
You can rename yourself in Skyrim, but everybody still call you Dragonborn.
You can rename yourself in Mass Effect but everybody call you Shepard.
In fallout you are called the lone wanderer.
Basically, since the game is fully voiced, it will NOT be possible to let you change the name that everybody calls you by. It's really basic, and you should understand that limitation.
Your chosen name might appear in text in articles/wanted-ads/mails/whatnot - but it will never ever be said by anybody who can actually talk because that is just not possible technologically to do that.
Wrong. Final fantasy 7 was not voiced over.
When the game just has text dialogs, it's easy to rename your character - like I explained.
+1
By all indications so far, you have a real name you pick, and you have a nickname the game refers to you by. The reasons for this have been explained multiple times.
