Game locks up near the end (unmarked spoilers)

I'm at the part where one takes control of the fisherman to answer the scientists' emergency call. I grabbed the tackle box and used it on the slight indentation on the library floor to reach the HQ manual. After he places the box on that spot, nothing happens. I can't access the inventory (it's locked, as if a cutscene was still playing) and can't load a save file or even exit the game, as those parts of the UI disappear as well. I can still pause the game via ESC key. I'm on Win10 Home. I've been t...

Stuck

Anyone know where the saved games are. I tried to play this game again but everything is so buggy now compared to what I remembered when I first got this game. I have tried to replay this 3 different times and I keep getting stuck when the guy gets the card and gets out of the cell and the screen goes back to the ship. Can't get anything to continue at that point, nothing moves. Kind of a cute game to play, and I would like to play it all the way through. Maybe deleting the old saved games might work, I do...
