iirc it's intuitive enough to figure it out, I can't currently check myself how it looks, but once you've arrived on that page you should be able to find it. If not you can also google how to play it in English. I also did that to find said page because I thought you had to use the (apparently by now non-functional) google app.
That said I also think the gacha is worth it in itself so far. Definitely some side detail that you won't get in the anime while the series does a better job at honing in on the main cast. So they both complement each other rather well.
Oh, and the game doesn't have a JP version, it only has one, single, global version with support for both Japanese and English. But you have to go through the Japanese interface to create an account, I remember there being a site that guides you through that, though.
Story-wise iirc GBVS starts during the Nalhegrande arc, between the 000 side-story (What Makes The Sky Blue, Paradise Lost and 000 are hilariously enough more important to the games' story and lore than the main story itself, all three are permanently accessible in the browser game) and the appearance of the Tower of Babyl.
If you are looking to hit the original game, be warned there are MANY things you should know beforehand or you'll have a bad time. I've written a little intro in a past thread a year ago that sums up everything, kinda: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1090630/discussions/0/3187988018485200064/
The advice still holds up today, just know that when you start is important, just like in many other gachas.
There will be an amazing banner (halloween legfest) in a few hours from now (in which case Lich, Florence, Mugen and eventually Vane are prime targets), and then in december the game will have its usual new year campaign which is the most generous period of the year with the most broken stuff coming out.
So I'd say either now or at the very end of november are the best moments to get started.
Oh and they finally made a decent implementation of https so non-JP players can actually compete in terms of ping now. Cygames not being useless ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for once
If you are the careful type, make a throwaway account first, commit your russian roulette esports player mistakes, see if you like the game. If you do, then make a new account or a few rerolls on an important banner and you're good to go. You even have an alt to do impulse seasonal yolo rolls on to avoid getting baited on your main, isn't that convenient.
They haven't told so much about Re:link, but it does happen in a different timeline apparently.
Each thing it's own universe.
