Even if Quake 1 is still my favorite from the franchise, today, I like 2 as much as I like 4... or maybe a tiny bit more than 4, just because of the music. It rocks.
Sorry but you might feel like this but you are not correct.
Many of us loved Q1 and played modded versions (Team Fortress) at LAN parties. Q1 IS legendary, not just the revolutionary and smooth graphics (especially when GLQuake was released for the lucky people with 3DFX cars), but also the audio, the sound of of a perfectly fired grenade clinking off 2 walls before exploding your buddy, the incredible and ground breaking industrial soundtrack, 9 inch nails! But most importantly the mods like Team Fortress that cement it as legendary.
Literally every online FPS game today descends from the work ID software and modders pioneered on Q1, there are probably a few games today that could learn a thing or two from Q1s reliable LAN server code.
Duke3D was also legendary and brought a different style, more personality and political but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ was an absolute PITA to get working over a LAN! Often we ended up going back in frustration to multiplayer Quake Team Fortress or some other mod.
When I played Quake 1 the first time, I was positively surprised and love now both. But Q2 will always have a special place in my heart. Everyone played it, even years after release.
My Uncle bought a Voodoo and I was always jealous.
