Quake II RTX

Don't understand the hype with the raytracing
Finally i got a rtx 3070, tested this one, control and metro exodus.

I don't feel any different.

I have Quake 2 on a CD somewhere but didn't enjoy the game all that much back then. The ray-tracing only makes me feel like it's a low sample pass of Blender's Cycles render, a quick 5 pass on Cinema 4D Prorender, or similar physical renderer. Creating 3D scenes that look like this over 10 years ago, albeit prerendered, dulled the impact of realtime raytracing to me. The only impressive part of RTX , to me, is that it's doing it much faster than a minute per frame.

It's not going to increase the number of polygons that were designed at least 20 years ago. Not sure what you were expecting, but the link above shows a very favorable outcome. Drag the vertical slider side to side and see for yourself.

It is the lighting with the Earth sky environment and reflections in water, metal and glass that impress me the most when I play the RTX version. I really liked the quake2xp source port of the game too because it has great colours and detailed textures but the things I have mentioned look so much better in the RTX version.

The light and shading make the scene photorealistic, not the details. Raytracynk helps in that a lot. Quake is only a demo what you can achieve when game recieve propore support. To be honest i prefer to see raytracing in doom 3 or quake 4, there was many places where you can show the power of technology. Bu i think that for quake 2 was less effort to include this.

yea on those games its not worth it but on games that have ♥♥♥♥♥♥ graphics like minecraft and quake its really good and worth it.

I do not know if raytracing will change how you feel about any game, but its main strength is allowing for reflections in a way previously impossible. The tech is still very new and any card capable of it will likely become outdated in only a handful of years. It is the "future" because it allows for a way to render accurate lighting easier than current methods.

i think it's overhyped, but if you people are happy with it then i'm ok

Please remember that in new games even without rtx all games run faster on new cards, so use it like a device to run 4k with 60fps in modern games. And the rtx is a cherry on the top :P

"woah dude reflecshunz"

I use to spend the night often and play Quake 2 with a buddy in middle school at his house so it holds a special place in my heart. We played Weapons Factory which was a mod similar to Team Fortress online through 2 networked PC's mostly with a bit of Worms and Duke Nukem 3d on the side lol. Worms was a blast when he had birthday parties with 4-5 of us sleeping over. You have to remember this was before PC gaming was very popular. I had a crappy Windows 95 PC at that time, and it had Minesweeper, Solitaire, and AOL was all since it would not run those "modern games." I had a N64 though.

I was so happy when they released RTX for Quake 2. I played it a bit, but I recently came back to actually give it a full go. Fun old school game, and with amazing lighting that makes it look almost modern IMHO. It runs great on my 2070 Super @2k.

I wish we could all play Weapons Factory together with this new tech. I doubt the person that made that mod is around anymore though. There were a few fun maps I remember trying to defend the flag.

Me neither. Problem with RT is two fold.

It's impressive in a 20 year old game because the game is 20 years old. It makes RT look better than it is because you are expecting to see a really old game with poor rasterized lighting.

In a modern game like CyberPunk RT is Meh, I can take it or leave it. It's just not much better than modern Rasterization of lighting shadows and reflections.

I do think it's a bit of a scam. And thats coming from a 3080 owner.

I just want to say I had the exact opposite emotional experience. Playing Q2RTX made the game feel completely modern, regardless of the low-poly count.

Plus, the actual "excitement" is more about the development pipeline than anything else. Being able to set global illumination and light sources and have the scene just "be lit properly no matter what is happening" (like you would in film) is a MASSIVE change over having to bake lights into the scene by hand.

The problem with getting the average consumer to get excited about technology like this is that, in it's perfect state, you wouldn't notice ray tracing.

Reflections would reflect like the brain expects them to.

Shadows would form like you would see out in the world.

Light would cast appropriate color mixture and tonality just like you see in film.

A perfect implementation of Ray Tracing would appear to be "normal" to our brains. So I understand the "what's the big deal" feeling for someone who isn't already fascinated by the development side of things.

Reflections are ok, but I was impressed by the new lights. I played around a lot to have similar difference between the indoor and outdoor brightness as the original game, and also played through with the original environment map, but I think, it adds a lot that you have light only where there is a lightsource. The original quake 2 works with a lot of fake light sources.

Note, that I had to tune the opengl version in the RTX as well, because it was awful compared to the original Q2, it was completely misconfigured.

Odd I found it looked awesome. Cyberpunk is one of the most impressive games I have seen graphically. I was able to run it maxed out at 2k with my 2070S and medium ray tracing. It was gorgeous.

You must be either nearly blind or trolling, if you think there's no noticeable difference between Q2 and Q2RTX.

New Technologies are often hyped to sell them to gullible people.
