Why the heck was this studio closed??
The game was a massive hit, writing, music, graphics are all top tier, what went wrong?

Massive hit? Yeah, dont think so.
What went wrong is that Marvel has been sucking for a while in movies and tv shows and before this came Avengers, a game that made everyone recoil from this one.
its still a good game, sunsetter just a mad little boy.

Boring game, with too much forced marvel "humor"
Massively good game yes, massive commercial success no. It did not go mainstream like the first Insomniac Spider-Man game did, but it was developed during a time when Marvel IP licenses were no doubt super costly exactly due to the insane success of that game.

Unfortunately the MCU movies coming out around the release window of this and couple other Marvel games turned out to be less successful than the Infinity Saga and actually drove a lot of fans away, especially gamers. So the sales figures of GotG were doomed to fall flat despite it being one of the best Marvel games ever made and not preaching woke politics either.

Plus the other, even bigger and much more expensive Marvel project(Avengers) of the same company failed in other ways as well and caused the shutdowns and selling of the studios.

Crystal Dynamics went back to developing Tomb Raider games for their new owners.

Yep. IMO one of the biggest fundamental issues with the modern gaming industry is that a lot of AAA publishers - and in particular western AAA publishers, from what I can tell - are only really satisfied with truly massive successes. They want the next Fortnite, Elden Ring, or Stardew Valley. A game that just reviews well and does moderately well financially is simply not good enough because they're chasing the white whale of the next mega-hit.

It sucks because it feels like it gives devs no room to organically build franchises through slow and steady growth.
