The character banter is heavily inspired by the movies though, so playing the game often gives that same feeling from the movies. There are also some MCU themed optional skins you can use on the characters if you wish; I prefer the comic book versions.
Even the third movie is better than anything else that's come out of the MCU since the last Spider-Man movie.
I also wondered how closely it would follow the films. It doesn't.
The story is set in the same world, and the characters are vaguely similar but way more kind, supportive and woke (obviously), for the gaming demographic. Some of their back stories and motivations are very different from the films. Their appearance is also totally different - except Groot and Rocket, but you can discover new skins to equip including exact replicas of the outfits from the movies.
There are a lot of references in the game to people, places, and things I vaguely remembered from the movies, which I had not seen in a while, but it delved in deeper. So, about 20 hours in, I went back and watched every appearance of the Guardians in the MCU: all 3 films, Avengers Infinity War and Endgame, and the Holiday Special. I found that the game enhanced my understanding and appreciation for the characters and world of the films, and vice versa.
