Rapid Reload Help Please

I am unable to get this perk to work. Apparently I am simply too uncoordinated to manage it 😵‍💫 I am playing on my PS4. Can anyone tell me how frequently this perk is required in order to proceed in the game. I somehow lucked out and got it to work to get me past the work bench room in chapter one, but am trying gym use it again and after 30 minutes I give up! I am hoping that this perk will not be required elsewhere and I can continue to play.

It really isn't very intuitive at all, but the way I have gotten it to work for me is to allow the guns to overheat the first time. As they start to cool down, the indicator will pass through a small green zone in the heat meter. Press fire again when your indicator is in the green zone and then you are in rapid reload mode.

You need to shoot until you overheat, else the perk won't trigger.
