Taking forever to update?
So I just bought the game after all the mostly positive reviews. Whilst i downloaded it the first time I had some problems with the download just kinda stopped sometimes (I know it has to install the game too, but it happened way more than some other games). But I thought oh well it's all going to be fine when I finally installed the game. I played the game for about an hour and then had to go do something else.

When I then came back excited to come play some more I had to download an update, and thought hey this is only gonna take a couple of minutes. It has now taken over an hour just to install (not talking about downloading btw) but just to install the update. And the weirdest thing is just that it said at one point that it had installed 40 gb out of 55 or something, and then I look again a couple of minutes later and then it says 25 out of 55 gb. I am just wondering if anybody else has experienced similar issues, because this has never happened to me before so I just found it strange and really annoying.

Did you install the game on a HDD or SSD, and how much empty room did you have it on the disk? Is it an old one? Sometimes when Steam runs out of usable clean space for the install, it has to rearrange things around on the drive, and these longer installation periods may occur.

Steam was acting a little funny earlier. Could just be that.

Ah ok that might explain it, because I did find it weird that it only would be this game that would have this kind of issue. But yeah I haven't really used Steam for anything else today so that might be why. Thanks for the info :)

It is on a SSD but there is "only" 80 gbs or so left after the game was installed so that could maybe also be the reason, but I don't know how much an SSD has to have left before it starts to affect installations and such

Depends on if it's all clean empty space or space which has had a lot of reads & writes on it already. SSD's do slow down the smaller their empty space gets as well. Newer models can stay at optimal speeds with less free space, but with some older ones you need up to 50% free to maintain optimal speed.

Yup i'm stuck at 0mbps at halfway. Download is crashing due to too many people trying to get fixes for this mess

Yeah okay didn't know that. Guess I am gonna go clear up a bit in my SSD. As far as I know it's not that old of an model, but I am just gonna go clear some GBs for my SSD to make sure

I've finished the download twice now and it just resets it's self to 0% done lol and apparently some people can't even play after the update due to a black screen at the main menu. Nothings ever simple these days

Mine is doing this same thing, has completed twice now, plenty of space on the SSD (200gb free space) but it keeps looping and going back to 0%. If anyone figures out how to fix this please let me know.

Finally finished for me after waiting for a while, but now the game crashes to desktop after getting to the square enix logo.. so the game's not even playable right now. getting a bit tired of this

Damn, I might just refund it and buy it on my PS5 instead if it’s so bad after the patch

The game isn't broken for everyone, works just fine for me and thousands of others who currently are playing it on Steam. As with all PC games, the mileage varies based on each individual user's hardware and its condition.

Yeah tbf I haven’t played it since I updated it, but ill try tomorrow and see if I have the same issues or none

its moving data around, modifying it and then moving the data back. I hate it when games are packaged like that. a small amount of patch data can require large chunks of the game to be replaced.
Captain Worthy Nov 5, 2021 @ 6:51pm
You also have to account for the space needed for the patching process itself, as many games these days do it by copying itself in its entirety, applying the patch to this fresh copy, and then deleting the original. So you need to have as much of empty space on your drive as your largest game takes. Even just a 1mb patch can require 80+ gigs of free space due to this.
