oh i didn't know that, that sounds really good actually. i often pick main roads or highways early. get the other somewhere in the midgame and get dirt roads late game for mountains and forest fights
Dirt roads can be really good, depends on the map though and which governor you are playing as. Like the new opium map can be beaten relatively easily by just buying all 3 roads at the start and buy max rural outreach office for an early stabilization of the areas that can produce opium.
oh i know, i found out roads were good just before the map got released, main roads and highways combined with drill sergeant made for an easy game. especially with the smuggler cuz soldier strength is not important for destroying opium fields and you can get some free funds in exchange for weaker units, cutting costs initiative plus sergeant also gets you the units really quickly. And farmer as advisor is just a given on that map. honeslty the new map is pretty tame as far as difficulty goes. i have more trouble with black caves, or pistachio forest. which seem like the hardest maps to me.
any tips for HQ starting spots?
Generally as central as possible and on a main road or highway IMO. About the only potential exception of a kind I can think of to that is Azure Dam, where it can be sensible to put your HQ right into the big city in the corner.
