Constant slowdowns, and "blinking" when switching screens

I recently bought the game, and while the gameplay is fun, I'm experiencing quite a number of problems in-game. First of all, the game plays in a very unfluid way. It appears to be running at a low framerate, and in addition, there are also frequent pauses and "skips". I even tried reducing my settings (turning antialiasing down, for example), in case my PC was somehow struggling with the game, but it produced no effect.
